At one point in time, Sonic the Hedgehog was the flagship franchise for Sega in much the same sense that Mario serves a similar role for Nintendo. It was popular, so much so that it spawned numerous comics, TV shows, and other products. However, Sonic the Hedgehog is not as popular in the present as it was in the past, perhaps because newer installments in the franchise have met with what can be called a mixed response by its fans at best. Still, the success of the most recent offering Sonic Mania suggests that there is still plenty of enthusiasm from a wide range of consumers that can be stirred up for the franchise, so it should come as no surprise to learn that further progress is being made on a Sonic the Hedgehog movie.
What Can We Expect from the New Sonic the Hedgehog Movie?
Technically, the new Sonic the Hedgehog movie was announced in 2010. For those who are curious, it was supposed to be made by Neal Moritz, who is responsible for a number of famous movies such as I Know What You Did Last Summer and The Fast and the Furious, in collaboration with other figures such as Toby Ascher, Evan Susser, and Van Robichaux. As a result, it is no exaggeration to say that there was a fair amount of talent lined up behind the project, particularly since Tim Miller was involved as an executive producer while Jeff Fowler was involved as a director.
Initially, the new Sonic the Hedgehog movie was supposed to be made through Sony Pictures. Unfortunately, that plan fell through when Sony Pictures announced that it had been put into turnaround, which is when a movie studio is no longer able to move forward on a proposed project because it has written off its costs as a loss on its financial statements. Fortunately, Sony Pictures then proceeded to do what a lot of movie studios do with a lot of projects that have been put in turnaround, which is to say, they sold it to Paramount Pictures. As a result, while the new Sonic the Hedgehog encountered a significant obstacle in the road, it is nonetheless moving forward. Something that should come as welcome news to fans of the franchise who are willing to take a chance on what is supposed to be a project that will blend live action with CGI elements.
Can the New Sonic the Hedgehog Movie Succeed?
Now, it remains to be seen whether the new Sonic the Hedgehog movie will succeed or not. On the one hand, the success of Sonic Mania shows that there is still interest in the franchise. Furthermore, the people behind it are proven talents, meaning that it is not unreasonable to expect them to make something worth watching. On the other hand, it is not unknown for even the most talented film-makers to turn out something terrible from time to time. Never mind how it is not unknown for the fans of the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise to reject something that fails to meet their standards. At this point in time, it is too soon to speculate at length, but on the plus side, Sonic Forces is coming out soon, which should tide them over until more news about the new Sonic the Hedgehog movie is released.
