I can’t believe I’m actually saying this but a remake of The Great Outdoors starring Kevin Hart isn’t that bad of an idea. Hart’s established himself as one of the leading comedic actors and the idea of him heading to a lake house with his family to fight the elements and a crazy relative isn’t bad. While part of me thinks the 1988 classic starring John Candy and Dan Aykroyd, written by John Hughes, should be untouchable, it’s been nearly 30 years and I could see this working.
The main question I have is, “who is going to play Roman?” While John Candy was great in the 1988 film it was clearly Aykroyd who stole the show and had the most memorable lines as the snotty brother. This might be a reach but I’m thinking someone like Eddie Murphy. The age gap is probably too great but this would be a great opportunity for Murphy to show he’s still got it.
As of now the film is searching for a director so we’ll keep you posted on that end. Randall Green (Billions) is writing the script so I’m pretty confident the movie’s already off to a solid start. I’m almost ashamed at myself for doing such a 180 on remakes but you gotta stay with the times.
