Jared Leto Gives an Update on the Iron Reboot

It took almost 30 years before the sequel to the original Tron came to life, but fans of the franchise are hoping that it won’t take nearly those lengths before another installment comes into production. 2010’s Tron: Legacy did well enough in the box office to solidify the idea of a third movie, but that idea has been put on hold as of a couple of years ago, while Disney pursues other movie ventures.

There’s been news recently that the cancellation might slowly be getting pulled back, as talks about the projects seem to be going on. According to Blade Runner 2049 actor Jared Leto, he’s been in discussions about the possibility of a Tron reboot. The fact that there’s even any talks about the project is a good sign that the idea is probably coming out of the ice chamber to slowly thaw. According to Leto, he believes there are more stories left to tell about that world, and he wants to become instrument to their delivery. He’s looking forward to working on the project if it ever gets into a more definitive level of production, but at this point, Leto claims it’s too early to tell.

Sources say that if it were to happen, Leto will be playing a character named Ares, one of the main focuses of an already proposed script. The goal is to ultimately reshape the entire franchise, so the third Tron movie will be more of a spinoff rather than a reboot. Tron 3 even had a proposed name already: Tron: Ascension. Since everything is just in the initial stages of being talked about, there are a lot of things that can still change before it comes into production. Either way, Leto sounds excited and eager to be playing a part of a supposed movie, and if everyone involved has that level of interest in making the movie come to life, we might be looking at the reality of it soon enough. Unfortunately, not everyone sounds as excited as Leto does. Tron: Legacy’s writer and director Joseph Kosinski has spoken about the idea of a new Tron, but he isn’t exactly jumping up and down about it. According to Kosinski, the project is not truly an active concern and has even gone as far as saying that the project’s life is in freeze mode.

As Tron fans, we’d like to believe that Kosinski is keeping it all under wraps, but that major talks are actually going on. After all, they’ve got the title; they’ve got the script, and they even have an excellent actor willing to be a part of the project. The next step is really to just commit to the production, but we know it’s easier said than done. Maybe the project needs an entirely new director to carry on the film; maybe it needs someone else who is more excited to take on the challenge. We can’t begin to imagine what a new Tron movie will be like, but we’ll have to just hold off on waiting before we get disappointed in the movie not happening at all.
