Jane the Virgin Review: Rosy Views and Reality Checks

Jane the Virgin

The theme of this week’s Jane the Virgin was romanticizing versus reality. Everyone has ideas of what they think they can compromise for a potentially great change, but reality always tends to slap us in the face. Let’s see if reality was kind to everyone on Jane the Virgin this week.

Now that Jane and Professor Chavez/Hottie are completely on, Jane is considering letting go of her virginity. I have to admit, they have amazing chemistry together. Xiomara comments on how it seems like her daughter is a whole new Jane! Jane and Professor Hottie come very close to doing the deed, until the virgin reveal; plus Chavez is only looking for something casual. Jane can test the boundaries of her limits all she wants, but she is still Jane, and Jane has never been a casual girl. Boy is she determined to change that though! She comes so very close again, but ultimately Jane just can’t do it. It’s not as if she doesn’t want to, but Alba points out that when it’s not the right guy, it’s just not right.

As Petra’s due date nears she needs help planning for her twins. With her mother in jail, no friends, and plenty of hormones, Petra is in desperate need of assistance. Rafael asks Jane to help Petra shop for standard registry items, and Jane is so sympathetic she takes it farther and offers to throw Petra a baby shower. Unfortunately Jane and Petra have very different ideas of what constitutes a worthwhile purchase. Jane thinks that Petra is being judgmental and Petra thinks that Jane is being condescending. Neither one of them wants to fake their way through a pity party. As different as they are, Jane and Petra do have one thing in common; they both appreciate honesty. So they decide to be completely truthful with each other and their expectations. Even if they are never friends, hopefully they can have a good working relationship as their children will be siblings.

Juggling the responsibilities of fatherhood with Mateo and two more on the way is hard enough when you’re not trying to stuff down your emotions. Rafael has no time to deal with Luisa apologizing for staying in touch with the woman who kidnapped his child. Yet he can’t help but reflect on Luisa’s feelings when Jane firmly tells Rafael she no longer loves him. It’s a major punch to Rafael’s heart, and unfortunately I don’t see it healing quickly.

Rogelio and Xiomara sit down and have an honest discussion about where they stand since Rogelio wants kids and Xiomara doesn’t. Neither one of them wants to give up on their relationship despite their differences, so they try their best to work out a compromise. Rogelio even gathers the courage to tell Xiomara about his accidental past as a Gigolo. (Yeah, only Rogelio could accidentally fall into that line of work.) They get engaged as Rogelio compromises with Xiomara, asking if she would consider freezing her eggs just in case she changes her mind. Xiomara struggles with what the right decision is, and ultimately decides that the only child she wants in her future is her grandson. Unfortunately this means she has to let Rogelio go.

Now that Michael has figured out that Rose and Elena are working together he has to find them. Since Michael has the chip which contains all of the criminal faces Rose and Elena changed, he uses one of those criminals to lure the formerly known Sin Rostro and Mutter back to town. Or at least that’s what the audience is led to believe the plan is. The real plan involves Luisa getting into a fake accident to lure Rose back to town. Once Rose realizes she has been set up, she attempts to use Susanna as her hostage to get out. During a struggle Susanna is shot and Rose ends up dead. So finally, with the crisis over, Michael goes to Jane and asks for one more chance. Just like that, sometimes reality is better than you ever could have hoped for.

Ultimately the lesson is that being true to yourself is always the best policy, and sometimes it’s the one that works out best. Will Jane and Michael finally get their Happily Ever After?
