Jane the Virgin Review: Is Petra Finally Freed?

Jane the Virgin

Jane the Virgin’s third season has been a resurgence of the entire series and the extended Villanueva family. We come for the telenovela plot twists, but we stay for the family moments. Part of this season’s focus has been putting together the men in Jane’s life outside of the context of Jane. Finally this week we got our first male bonding with all the men, whether they be six feet or two feet tall. Not to mention the most anticipated return of them all, Petra’s big, bad homecoming.

Rafael and Michael’s bonding experience doesn’t go as planned. They have nothing in common, and a misunderstanding over Rafael’s personal life makes things worse. In contrast, Rogelio’s new bromance with Rafael is going swimmingly. Now that Rogelio sees that the father of his grandson is a good guy, everything’s loosened up a little bit; and we do mean everything. Rafael helps get Rogelio an audition for a movie with full frontal nudity. Plus, it turns out that Michael didn’t misunderstand what Rafael was doing, as he was sleeping with a producer to get Rogelio an audition. Despite Rogelio’s efforts to help, Rafael and Michael end up in an argument which has been simmering for years. Michael has never forgiven Rafael for breaking him and Jane up. The time has come for them to let go of the past, if only for Mateo’s sake. After nearly losing Mateo, Rafael and Michael let go of the past. They’re going to be in each other’s lives forever, so they better start getting along now. To cap off the men’s bonding, Rogelio gets the part, but with a catch. #BoysDaySuccess.

Xiomara also has fantastic news on the job front. She’s been searching and searching for what to do with her life, when the answer has been staring her in the face. What a great way to use Grease‘s “Beauty School Dropout” moment than to inspire Xiomara to open a dance school!

Now we love our Jane, but we all know she has a tendency to push people in directions they don’t feel comfortable. She does this on two fronts, first with Michael and Rafael, and then with Alba and her sister’s letters. Alba’s letters are a treasure trove for Jane. Suddenly her family isn’t a few leaves on a plant, it’s a whole tree! Jane has a huge Latino family like the rest of us! The issue is that Alba only let Jane read those letters on the conditions that she never tell Alba what is in them, and she never contact her family. For the first time in Jane’s life, Alba is genuinely furious with her granddaughter. Alba’s hurt goes deeper than anything Jane has had to go through. Because Alba’s sister revealed to the family that Alba lost her virginity before marriage, Alba lost her entire family. This is one issue Alba won’t budge on, but neither will Jane. Though she knows that Alba will be furious, Jane can’t resist when one of her cousins reaches out to contact her. Alba has every right to stay away from people and memories which pain her. Jane also has the right to reach out to her own blood. Little did she know her blood would show up on her doorstep.

Finally, finally, finally someone has figured out that Petra is not Petra! Jane and Rafael believe that this is why Petra hasn’t been herself, but it’s so crazy that they doubt themselves. At Michael’s insistence, they decide they need more proof. Nothing says proof like a hidden NannyCam. Most of what Anezka does on camera doesn’t make Rafael too suspicious. Honestly, Anezka’s probably been a more doting mother to the twins than Petra was because of her post-partum depression. When Anezka gets into a furious argument with her mother over the phone, that gives Rafael cause for concern. He thinks he’s finally going to get answers when Petra starts to come out of her paralytic state, but Petra lies about her name. Not to worry, Petra hasn’t lost her mind. She’s going to turn the situation to her advantage to get revenge. That’s the Petra we know and love! After Petra regains her composure and her hair, she orders Anezka to break up with Scott. Thanks to Jane’s meddling, Scott works up the nerve to ask “Petra” to marry him. Anezka’s glee is short-lived, but pretending to be engaged to Scott for a short time reminds Petra of a few things. She came up from nothing to come to America and build this massive life for herself (#AmericanDream). Why should she let anyone take it away from her? What better way to get back at Rafael for insinuating she is a bad  mother, than by buying him out of the hotel completely?
