I can’t rightfully discount the experiences of so many women that have stepped forward to name the next sex offender in what could eventually prove to be a long list of them, James Toback. What I can do is say that guys like this are giving a lot of other guys bad names since they seem to think that they can get away with anything they want and pass it off as no big deal. Yeah, that old chestnut. There are so many things wrong with this case that it’s hard to know where to begin. As a man it’s very easy to get defensive but as a man that respects women with a deep and abiding sense of right and wrong it’s also just as easy to look at Toback and want to see him be punished just as much as Harvey Weinstein is now.
There are inconsistencies on both side of the coin, but none more so than on Toback’s. The idea of asking why the women he harassed didn’t come forward earlier is moot since the idea of having to be ashamed, afraid, and fearing for their jobs is enough to answer that insipid question. Toback is a big man, and a forceful man from what it sounds like. He also seemed to have a little pull, enough that he could make or break a person back in the day. But at the moment I can honestly say this is the first time I’ve heard about him. That doesn’t erase the fact of what he’s done or the fact that he’s trying to get away from it. Claiming that diabetes and a heart condition keep him from doing the things that these women are accusing him of would be all well and good, except for the fact that he wouldn’t offer any more details.
That’s more than a little suspicious for a guy that’s apparently been guilty of harassing 38 different women throughout the years. The innocent don’t always offer full disclosure on their lives but it would certainly go a long way towards proving that they’re beyond reproach. Unfortunately it would seem that a man like Toback thinks he’s essentially untouchable and shows little if any remorse for his actions. Instead he’s striding forward as always it would seem, thinking that because he acts as though he doesn’t know these women that everything is okay.
Toback is 72 as of now and might finally be able to claim that biological impossibility to expose and grind himself against unsuspecting actresses as he used to do back in the day, but that offers no excuse for what’s been done. His agent, Jeff Berg, dumped him pretty quickly after the accusations started flying, and wouldn’t say just when his representation had ended. So far Toback is trying to hold out that he doesn’t know the woman that have accused him, claiming that he met them for five minutes if he met them at all. I suppose when all you’re looking for is self-gratification without any intent to give a bit of consideration to the woman you’re making promises to then it’d be easy to forget them.
