James Franco to Join the X-Men Universe with “Multiple Man”

It has been confirmed that James Franco will be in the X-Men film franchise. However, it is interesting to note that Franco won’t be just one more X-Man in an upcoming X-Men movie. Instead, he is developing his own movie at the moment through his Ramona Films. After which, Franco will be serving as the producer as well as the lead actor for the resulting movie. There isn’t too much information that has been released about the movie at this point in time, but Franco has stated that it will follow in the footsteps of both Logan and Deadpool in that it will be R-rated in nature. While that means sacrificing some segments of the movie-going population, the move makes sense in that it will serve to further distinguish movies in the X-Men franchise from their counterparts over in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, thus reducing the competitive pressure exerted upon them.

Who Is Multiple Man?

Speaking of which, no one knows who or what Franco’s movie will focus on, but the current speculation is that it will be centered around Jamie Madrox, who will, of course, be played by Franco himself. For those who are curious, Madrox is a character who goes around under the nickname of the Multiple Man, which is used because he has the power to create perfect copies of himself as well as whatever it is that is on his person when he absorbs kinetic energy of some kind. It doesn’t take a lot of kinetic energy for Madrox to use his power, which is why he has been known to create his copies by performing actions as simple as either snapping his fingers or stomping his feet.

With that said, Multiple Man offers some rather unusual and rather interesting possibilities for a superhero movie. This is because his copies are not extensions of Madrox so much as full-fledged entities in their own right who are capable of not just independent thought but also further use of the power to create perfect copies. As a result, it is not unknown for the character to come into conflict with his own copies in the comic books, not least because not all of them have been eager to be reabsorbed into the original. Suffice to say that if this is carried over to the resulting movie, we could see Franco versus Franco, which is the sort of thing that could prove to be either very amusing or very confusing depending on how it will be executed.

Unfortunately, too much remains unknown about the movie that Franco is developing at the moment to support much speculation. After all, it hasn’t even been confirmed that Multiple Man will be serving as the main character of the upcoming movie. However, if Franco can bring his characteristic touch to the end result, it will be interesting to see how it will influence not just the X-Men franchise but also the genre of superhero movies as a whole in the not so distant future.
