How the Show Modern Family Has Evolved Since Season 1

Some people like the show Modern Family, others love it, and some people just can’t stand it for their own reasons. But throughout the course of its run on TV the show has undergone a few changes that have allowed it to remain one of the more dynamic programs that’s been seen as one of the best bits of comedy in a long time. The characters have changed marginally, meaning almost not at all in some cases, as to do this seems like it would be to eradicate a lot of what made the show popular in the first place. But the situations they find themselves in, the things they deal with on a daily basis, and the lifestyles they entertain have changed just enough to keep the show interesting and to make people want to see what’s going to come next.

From season 1 and on things have been kept to a gradual level of change.

Phil and Jay are somewhat closer.

If you remember from the first season Phil and Jay never really seemed to click since Phil is something of a free spirit, more than a little goofy, and tends to be the kind of guy that is more emotional than most. Jay on the other hand is the ‘man’s man’, the patriarch of the family and the kind of guy that Al Bundy might have become had he been allowed to make something of his life. In other words Jay is the kind of guy that just doesn’t mesh with a guy like Phil since he doesn’t wear his emotions on his sleeve and he would much rather sit at home with a cigar and a tumbler of scotch than go out and jump on a trampoline with a guy like Phil. But throughout the series the two have had their many mishaps and misadventures, but there’s always been that feeling that Jay has finally been getting closer to Phil in his own way, meaning that he won’t always show his emotions but he’ll at least admit that Phil is a good father and a good husband to Jay’s daughter Claire. That’s something at least.

Throughout the series you really get to see why Claire and Mitchell are the way they are.

Both Claire and Mitchell are absolute control freaks, but between the two of them Claire is the more overbearing one while Mitchell is the kind of guy that will make small noises of disapproval, give the kind of looks that can carry multiple meanings, and will often reply with snarky comments that are meant to be biting or otherwise eye-opening. While their respective spouses, Phil and Cam, tend to put up with a lot of this, they also recognize that Claire and Mitchell tend to get their personality quirks from their father, or in Mitchell’s case from his interactions with his father. It’s no secret that Jay still isn’t comfortable with the whole ‘gay thing’ as he calls it, but throughout the seasons he’s come to accept his son Mitchell and Cam and it’s been seen that Claire is more like him than she wants to admit. Plus, after meeting their mother it’s very easy to see where the two of them earned their daddy and mommy issues while growing up as the dynamic between Jay and Dee Dee is something that has ‘trouble’ written all over it. With parents such as these there weren’t a lot of other ways for the two siblings to end up.

A few of the characters have become a lot more interesting.

Gloria is one that a lot of people seemed to either think was placed on a pedestal or just wasn’t that great since the character seemed a bit too uppity for her own good and at times was seen to be less of a real person than a caricature. But throughout the seasons she’s showed a great deal of change and has become a lot more easy to relate to in some ways since the character has displayed a great deal of heart. Luke on the other hand started out as kind of a dim bulb that had flashes of brilliance only to grow into a semi-adult that rarely has any intelligent moments and is too much like his father for anyone’s liking when it comes to his slightly skewed sense of self-confidence. One character that many people have wanted to see change however is one that really hasn’t, and that’s Manny, since he’s been the prim and proper gentleman that’s mature beyond his years since he was a young kid. But then if he changed then it would throw off the rest of the characters most likely.

While a lot has changed a lot has stayed the same, and many viewers are quite glad to see it.
