How The Show “Bring It!” Differs from The Movie Bring It On

There are a lot of people that have varying opinions on dancing and its many different styles and a good number of them might go so far as to say that while it’s flashy and even impressive it’s not entirely important. Of course a lot of us ignore those folks and admit that it’s flashy, impressive, and teaches a level of discipline and self-worth that can help to elevate a person when it comes to life and the choices they make. Dancing isn’t a pass for a perfect life but it takes enough patience, self-discipline, and determination to really excel at it. From a show like Bring It! to the movie Bring It On dancers are shown in many different lights and are often shown to be highly skilled but also lacking in certain personality traits at times that makes them seem superior in some ways but inferior in others. The truth of it is that dancing is an activity that demands a lot and in both the show and the movie it does require certain sacrifices that need to be made on the part of the individual from time to time. But as similar as the core concepts of the movie and the show can be, there’s a lot of difference between what the show does versus the movie.

Here are just a few differences that stand out.

Certain stunts just aren’t legal in competitions.

There are various stunts and techniques that are quite flashy and very impressive and can get the audience to go ‘ooh’ and ‘aah’ but are still considered unacceptable in competitions. This is more of a safety concern than anything since despite the fact that most dancers that are at the level shown on the show and in the movie it becomes a huge liability if anyone gets injured while performing a stunt that is considered to be high-risk. In the movies, such as Bring It On, the director wants things to be as impressive as possible but it’s also important to let people know that such maneuvers are considered to be quite dangerous at times and not to be performed by those that are untrained or that don’t have the necessary experience. On the show such tricks are performed but in a controlled manner and only after the instructor is confident that her dancers can take on the responsibility of such techniques.

The instructor is adamant about closed sessions.

Cheerleading sessions aren’t exactly a hush-hush thing no matter if it’s in a movie or in real life. People can watch, and some parents even witness from the stands without interfering. On the show however the instructor is very serious about the parents not being allowed into her studio since she needs the attention of the students on her and no one else. There’s no room during practice for a parent to talk to their child and otherwise distract them when there’s work to be done. It seems like a rather hard way to be but given that she’s attempting to train her dancers to compete for prizes and a great deal of prestige it’s also to be expected. On top of that she’s not only training them to be dancers, she’s training them to take pride in themselves and is trying to instill the kind of confidence that can transfer over to the rest of their lives as well.

There’s a deeper level of involvement from the girls’ mothers.

It should be worth it to argue this point since in cheerleading and in dancing the involvement of the mothers is usually a very assumed thing. While it was already stated above that the instructor for Bring It! doesn’t allow any outside interference the mothers of each dancer are still invested in their daughters and are highly supportive when it comes to their dreams and their desire to perform. In real life cheerleaders depend on their parents quite a bit also but like any other sport will defer to their coach or trainer if they’re smart and seek support from their parents when practice is over or before it begins. In Bring It On the parental support is there, but it’s negligible in comparison to that you see on the show since it wasn’t the main part of the movie and therefore wasn’t the focus.

You can say whatever you want to about dancing, it’s your right, but one thing you should probably leave alone is whether or not it’s worth the time of those that practice endless hours and repeat one movement after another over and over to perfect them so that they can flow from one step to the next. There’s a great deal of discipline needed in all forms of dance and watching someone that’s taken such an art form to the heights it deserves is simply breathtaking.
