How Far Game of Thrones Goes to Keep All Its Secrets Safe

Game of Thrones

If you want to know just how far Game of Thrones is willing to go then all you have to do is read up on Tilly Pearce’s piece on Metro to really understand the lengths that are being taken to preserve the integrity and secrecy of the show. Joe Jonas, who is now the fiance of Sophie Turner, actually had to sign a NDA, a non-disclosure agreement, upon visiting Sophie on set. You can imagine that since this next season is shaping up to be something epic that no one wants the secret of what’s going to happen to get out, and this is just one example of what’s being done to keep things on the down low. Cheryl Wassaner of Culturess even managed to write about how Kit Harrington is being so close-lipped about the show, sparing only enough detail to say that he’s going to be taking a few things with him. It’s fun to think that there might be a leak here and there, but so far the show has been subjected to all theory and no solid evidence as to what’s going to happen, and that’s the way it’s meant to be it would seem.

Thinking about it from the standpoint of the cast and crew this is something that’s meant to be kept secret after all, since the whole idea of their job is to deliver something entertaining that’s going to have people jumping at the bit to see it and glued to their seats the entire time as each episode runs its course. Leaking any secrets of what’s about to happen is like peeking behind the curtain at a magic show to see how the tricks are being performed. You know very well that there’s something going on where you can’t see, but trying to find out before the trick is over kind of ruins the mood and makes it less than impressive. This is why Game of Thrones is such a well-kept secret, people already know that there’s more to the magic seen on the screen, but but we still want to be amazed by the stunning revelations that are there to be experienced when they finally come along.

Game of Thrones has been running since 2011 when a lot of people still didn’t know much of anything about Westeros or the great houses that ran it and squabbled over it. In the eight years since it began, the show has amassed a humongous following that’s remained unflaggingly loyal and been with the characters every step of the way. Even when George R.R. Martin didn’t manage to keep up with the show, regrettable as that is, people still wanted to know what was to come after Dances with Dragons, especially given that Jon Snow had been stabbed to death and left to bleed out on the cold, hard ground. The gossip and rumor mills had already been going full-steam ahead at that time, but his ‘death’ only increased the pace and gave way to a whole new idea of what was going to happen now that Martin hadn’t produced another novel and the future of the series seemed to be in question. Max Knoblauch from Mashable said it best when he stated that we were all equals the moment this happened.

That was the absolute truth of it to be honest since up until that point those of us that had read the books did have a huge advantage over those that were simply watching the show and had no clue as to what came next. But once it was established that the series had outrun its author and creator it placed everyone on a much more level scale. It also made it much easier for the showrunner’s to surprise us moving forward. The secrets they wanted to keep became easier to hide under lock and key, and sometimes in plain sight, since no one had any idea what was going to happen and set photos, no matter how revealing, can be entirely misleading. Some of them might even be staged just to give a false sense of authority to those that don’t intend to keep secrets and will sell gossip and rumor to the highest bidder. This isn’t quite as prevalent as one might think but it isn’t above a lot of journalists to take the smallest bit of evidence and run as fast as they can with it.

But throughout the last few seasons GoT has managed to keep its secrets fairly well and has done a great job in keeping us all entertained. You can bet that NDA’s have been plentiful with many people and have allowed what’s coming to be kept under a tight and very secure shroud of mystery so that people will get to fully enjoy what’s coming. After all, winter is no longer coming for Westeros, it’s already here.
