So here’s the plan…..and here’s the reality. Plans don’t go the way they’re supposed to all the time. Plans are road maps that we carefully lay out and execute to the best of our abilities, but they aren’t bound by the laws of the world around us as much as we’d like to think. What we plan and what eventually happens can be two very different things. Success is the desired end of any plan, but it is not the only part of the plan that matters. The plan is the beginning, and the success is the end. What comes in between one and the other is what has to be endured and in some cases weathered.
This is what happens.
The plan goes ahead, and for a while things might go just fine. Everything seems great, the act of living and doing is enough to satisfy the plan for the time being. Then something goes wrong, and then another something goes wrong, and then finally the plan breaks down and all seems hopeless as those attempting to execute the plan find that what they wanted is now miles and miles away from where they are. This is when hopelessness sets in, and when one has a choice.
You can adapt, or you can find another direction.
Neither decision is easy, and in the pursuit of success nothing ever is. The chance to do what we want is often subjected to the uncertainty of what has to happen in order to make ends meet. One compromise is made, and then another, and before you truly understand how years have gone by and you’ve moved further and further away from the goal you sought to accomplish in the first place. You’ve managed to work against the very success that you wanted so badly in the first place. You’ve forgotten what you wanted in order to find your chance at success.
You get lost in other words.
The way back isn’t easy to find, and it’s bound to get harder before it gets easier. The term ‘success’ becomes much more important since it brings with it the stability and security that you’ve wanted so badly, but it brings very little of the happiness. For those that are lucky enough for the plan to work they can attain both, but for the majority, the plan changes with each compromise made, altering a person’s course subtly at first, and finally in such a drastic manner that a person will often lose sight of where they wanted to be in exchange for remaining where they currently are.
There is no such thing as a perfect plan, since life tends to take such plans and rip them to shreds with minimal effort in order that a person might make a new plan. To really enjoy life and success takes a great deal of hard work, effort, and a little luck now and again. Most importantly however it takes realizing that the plan will eventually break down, at which time a person will need to think up a different plan in order to move forward.
