Why “Hello Ladies” Really Needs to be Back on the Air

Hello Ladies is more or less the plight of one man that is, in many ways, the every-man that doesn’t rely on looks, money, or insanely lame gimmicks to get the attention of beautiful women that are somehow convinced that they can do better than a man that truly wants to get to know them for more than their looks. The show went off the air in 2014 after a run that was enjoyable but apparently not lucrative enough for HBO. Despite that however it is a funny and engaging show that should be brought back since it was one of those that managed to deal with a very real-life issue that has to do with the dynamics of what happens between men and women when it comes to the dating scene.

Honestly, how many of us out there are constantly struggling throughout much of our lives trying to find “the right one”, only to settle on someone that may or may not be that right one but is instead the one that is “right now”? It’s a constant test of wills and patience to see just how far a person can get with anyone these days without turning them off in some way that ruins the entire relationship. And plus, this show perfectly depicted the plight of those individuals what weren’t granted the classic good looks, the talent for picking up the opposite sex, or even the full range of confidence it takes to really get someone’s attention.

But why should it come back? That’s a good question, and there are at least a few answers that can be given.

The show was genuinely funny.

Admit it, watching someone fail so spectacularly on TV is kind of amusing, but it gets even better when they keep trying despite the fact that they can’t seem to win with anything they do. That kind of perseverance is uplifting and can add to the comedy since it shows people that no matter how pathetic a person might seem, be seen as, or even feel, there’s nothing that should be able to stop them from continuing to try for the life that they want. It’s amusing to watch since it reminds a lot of us what it was like to be on the dating scene and how hard it was to pick up the person of your dreams at one time. But it also reminds people that through a great deal of personal change, determination, and the unwillingness to give up that things can happen eventually. While the main point of the show was already given there was still a lot that could be explored in later seasons if it had been allowed to go on.

Shows that depict those seeking a relationship are uplifting in their own way.

Despite the comedy and the obvious feeling of being unable to provide any reason for the opposite sex to look his way Stuart is still very adamant about being able to find someone. In this world people that attempt to find their perfect mate have a very big obstacle put in front of them whenever they go out looking. It’s that THEY’RE LOOKING. Just looking for what you want in a person is not the best way to go about finding someone that will exhibit all those qualities that you want in a person. Sometimes it takes compromising to find what you’re really looking for and a slight easing of the standards that are unable to be met by just about anyone. This show is very up front about what Stuart wants in a woman, but it does tend to show him striking out since he goes for certain characteristics all the time. By the time a second season would have been allowed to roll out it could have been seen that he might have learned how to compromise on what he wanted and thus made his way towards another type of woman that wasn’t perfect, but was far more compatible and could satisfy him in ways that he didn’t know he needed.

Stephan Merchant needs this show as he’s the perfect person to show how relationships work, and how they don’t.

He manages to bring just enough comedy to the show that makes it easy and entertaining to watch even while you’re hoping that his character might find a woman that can tolerate and even get to know him. There are brutal moments in the show, emotionally brutal mind you, that depict the very real nature of dating and how it goes at times, but he continues to soldier on and keep looking for that one elusive woman that could be the girl of his dreams. His poise, his sense of comedy, and his ability to make people follow his every move is simply too great to let this show go without another chance.
