Meanwhile Kona is at Natalie’s house with Evan, and gets a call from Kelly about the Serbians. He sends her a picture of the suspect they caught and asks her to show Evan.
Back at Roland’s house, Adam searches the super computer for clues. He discovers that Roland has created a skeleton key that can access any security system on the island, including high security military computers and radar systems for Honolulu International Airport. They discover the hard drive for the skeleton key is missing.
Kona makes a crane for the Evan and says she had to make a thousand of them for her cousins wedding in Japan. Evan doesn’t recognize the suspect.
Back at Headquarters, Kelly, McGarrett, and Danno figure out that the suspect had come to Oahu two months earlier with Drago Zanovic (Peter Stormare).
They pull up files for other Serbians who had come in last three months, and Roland’s girlfriend Natalie shows up on the screen.
When Kona gets some paper from a drawer she sees a piece of paper with the time of the meeting written on it. It doesn’t go unnoticed by Natalie, and they have a great fight scene through the house and into the pool in the back. Kona nearly has her when Drago shows up with a gun to Evan’s head.
McGarrett calls Kona as she’s driving the Serbians to their meeting. She hints to him that she may take the boy to Mokuleia beach for a swim, then Natalie throws her phone out of the window. McGarrett gets the hint that they are driving North. (Side note: Mokuleia beach is the beach on LOST where the survivors of Oceanic 815 crashed. It was used in the first 12 episodes of Season 1 before they moved to Papailoa beach, also on the North Shore. Mokuleia is not the best place for a swim, it’s windy and the currents are strong.)
Kona pulls up at Dillingham Airfield, on the North Shore. They all go into a hanger and find Roland at a computer. Dillingham Airfield is located right next to Mokuleia Beach, it is an old military airfield that is now mostly used for sky divers and glider planes. It’s also portrayed as Nigeria in LOST, it was the same airfield that Mr. Eko’s drug plane took off from.
Drago threatens Evan to get Roland to do what they want. Adam is monitoring the skeleton key from Roland’s computer. He calls Danno to tell him the skeleton key has been activated and the approach radar at Honolulu International Airport has been shut down. McGarrett thinks a plane is either leaving or approaching undetected.
We find out that a plane is trying to land. Kona coaxes Drago into hitting her off her chair so she can grab a nail she spots on the ground to cut herself loose. Natalie wants Drago to kill Kona, but he wants another hostage.
Danno, Kelly and McGarrett see a black, unmarked plane flying very low, Kelly mentions A SKYDIVING SCHOOL (damn I’m good!) in the area. They guess it’s Dillingham Airfield. Filming Location Note, they are not actually at Dillingham Airfield, there is no hangar like the one they show in the episode. Based on the skyline in the background, and reports of filming, I’m guessing they are actually on Ford Island in Pearl Harbor.
The black plane lands and an Asian man comes into the hangar with a duffel bag full of money. Hawaii Five-O busts in and…cue the guns, punches, and swinging from high places on conveniently placed chains. And that is no insult to the show. The actions sequences are beautifully choreographed, really well done. Five-0 escapes the building just as it explodes, along with the bad guy.
Danno gives McGarrett crap for saying ‘book em, Danno’. ‘Really? Is that gonna be your thing?”, he asks. McGarrett responds with “yeah, it’s catchy.” I love that the show actually makes fun of itself.
Cut to Headquarters’bathroom. There is a really great scene with Kona looking at herself in the mirror, checking her bruises. I like that they showed her bruised. To me, it brought a sense of realism to the show, it showed that they bruise too, they aren’t super cops that never get injured. She walks over to her police uniform hanging on the wall, and zips it up in the black bag it’s in. Realizing she missed her graduation, she walks out of the bathroom to see Danno, Kelly, and McGarrett standing in police uniforms. Kelly speaks a phrase in Hawaiian – “O O maika’i keia puka’ana,” — and she nods knowingly. McGarrett hands her a box with a gun in it. Danno gives her a necklace with the patron saint of law enforcement on it. Kelly hands her a wand with the inscription “To my cousin, who always brings light to darkness.” And tells her that he wouldn’t have missed her graduation for anything. Then they swear her in.

After only two episodes, the arguing between McGarrett and Danno has already become tiring. When the trailer for this show came out, I anticipated the dynamics between them to be one of the strong points of the show, but the writing in this show is weak, and character development equally weak. It's great to have some confrontational banter, but when it becomes all the time, it is irritating. I also feel Daniel Dae Kim and Grace Park are capable of much more – we have seen that in LOST and The Border. Again, weak writing is the downfall – not the actors. Sorry to say – great theme, great scenery and action aside – this show is getting a failing grade from me and I had high hopes.
That is not what was said in Hawaiian. And the wand I believe was a nightscope or maybe a flashlight? not just a wand. Hence the appropriate inscription.
It was a tactical flashlight like police carry not a wand. Very appropriate.
that's what he said in Hawaiian, I listened to it over and over again. good call on the flashlight though
I’m a big fan of the original. I grew up on the 1970’s era cop shows and Five-O was one of the best. I’m sceptical of remakes, as they usually are comical and/or poorly done. I was impressed with the Pilot and Episode 2. They have done a good job transplating the characters in 2010 without making a mockery of it. Unlike another poster, I like the banter between McGarrett & Williams. It is rather ‘Psych – esque’ in my opinion. I don’t think there is too much banter–it is just about right. I know opinions will vary, but as a devoted viewer of the original (I still watch the old ones to this day) I am pleased with the new show. I hope a new generation likes it so we can have it around for a few years. Congratulations to CBS and the production staff.
FYI – The handgun, which McGarrett gave her, is a Kel-Tec PF-9 – probably a Parkerized finish, which can fire 9 x 19 mm bullets usually in 7 + 1 cartridge, very thin and light – a slightly version from the P-11. (see http://www.imfdb.com for a list of all guns used in the series).
Also, the tactical flashlight looks a TA series Fenix flashlight, probably TA-21 or TA-20 – which has one of the brightest LED beams. Police officers usually use either Surefire or Fenix flashlights, because of their quality, and often use a lithium battery.
BTW Steve McGarrett is using a Sig Sauer P226 handgun, commonly used by Navy and Marines officers and special forces personel. CBS has done pretty good homework on the details, similar to the details seen in NCIS and JAG series.
For the residents of Hawaii, Hawaii Five-O is a big deal. We watch it and cringe a certain parts, especially the local lingo portions. However, we love it and we are so glad Hawaii Five-O is back. Yes, it is different and many people will comment that it is not like the old one. It is not like the old one…you can't have police officers in suits and leather shoes running around catching criminals. What we are all hoping for is that the new Hawaii Five-O evolves and the characters become as iconic as the old show. Ask anyone who lives in Hawaii and knows what the old show did for the islands and they will tell you that they want the show to be successful and have as many seasons as the old one did.
Just yesterday, Sunday, October 3rd, at exactly 6:22pm, I was coming out of the Whole Foods Store at Kahala (Kahala is the area where Alex McLoughlin and the other stars are renting beach front homes) and I walked past a jeep that had just pulled in the parking lot. I walked by and took a double take and it was Alex McLoughlin and a male friend. I think he just came off set because he was wearing the dark shirt he usually wears on the show, but he had baggy khaki shorts on. They were laughing at something and looked liked they were going to Whole Foods to go grocery shopping. Anyway, a local resident with a dog was driving in a truck as the two walked across to the store. He stopped in front of them and said, "Hey, keep up the good work with Hawaii Five-O!" Alex and friend approached the truck and said "Thank you" and reached out to pet the dog and gushed over how cute the dog was and said, "Wow, what a cute dog." It was nice to see how personable he was and how relaxed and happy he looked. We hope that the entire cast will fall in love with Hawaii.
I love the new Hawaii Five-O. I was leery because I, too, always watched the original one, but I like the current one even better. I'm so happy that they have given it their own spin and not mimicked the old version. I like that they saved the iconic music and the character names, but gave the characters their own personalities. The shows hold my interest. All the actors are top-notch and the stories are intricately interesting. The scenery of course couldn't be better and they seem to use it more than the original 5-0 did. I'm so happy that Daniel Dae Kim is in it and I'd like to see him get a little more screen time.
Some truly nice and utilitarian information on this site, besides I think the layout has great features.
