Hart of Dixie Season 4 Episode 8 Review: “61 Candles”

Hart of Dixie

Everything feels almost too perfect on Hart of Dixie.  All the main characters are happily coupled off into all different stages of their relationships.  Even George Tucker is finally – finally! – discovering something he’s passionate about in life.  It’s only taken four seasons for this!

Obviously, Zoe and Wade have their baby on their brain, even more so after meeting Tom and Wanda’s baby girl, Frodo.  (I thought I was hearing them call her ‘Rhoda’ but no, it’s actually Frodo.  She’ll have no problem standing out in Bluebell with that name!)  First of all, Wade went from never holding a baby once in his life to holding ALL the babies by the end of the episode!  At the rate they’re jumping over time this season, Zoe is already seven months pregnant and with only two episodes left, we better get more than a handful of scenes of Wade holding his own son.  Anyway, though, Zoe and Wade feel pressured to find an heirloom for their baby, but come up short on both ends of their families.  Zoe’s biological father, Harley, was the reason she came to Bluebell in the first place but unfortunately, she never got the chance to know him.  That’s where Lemon comes in, because she grew up with Harley as her father’s business partner and friend.  It was very sweet of her to give Zoe a handmade duck that Harley made for her when she was younger.  It’s truly a shame that Harley and Zoe missed out on a typical father-daughter relationship.  Everything we’ve learned about Harley sounds like he just had a heart of gold.  In that respect, Zoe’s definitely shaping up to be more like her father than she could ever know.  Her son will be in good hands with her and Wade as parents, no matter the family heirlooms they present him.

Just last week Lemon was hitting pause on her relationship with Lavon before they even hit play again.  I actually don’t mind that they’re jumping over so much time this season.  It’s better to gloss over the small details of Lemon and Magnolia’s bonding with their new little sister to get to the good stuff, which is Lemon and Lavon’s relationship now on fast forward.  After one night together, they’re officially a couple.  Apparently everyone except for Brick knew about their affair a few years ago, which made for an awkward but funny little joke between Lavon and Brick.  All that matters is now there’s no need for secrecy because they’re in a mature and committed relationship.

This really was such a delightful episode with the way everything and almost everyone in town was so seamlessly woven in.  Because Tom was so busy and sleep-deprived with his newborn at home, the entire town takes up his various jobs.  The concept of the Blue-ber was entirely new tonight but it had me cracking up the most.  Of course, Bluebell would have their own Uber, and of course, Tom would be the one to drive it in addition to his handful of other odd jobs!

George isn’t quite on Tom’s level of that many jobs, but he has taken his artist management hobby seriously.  Who would’ve guessed that Meatball would be in talks for a deal at a major record label?  If all goes as well as it seems, George could probably make this his new life calling and leave law for good.  His parents’ visit was good timing for this reveal about his new “pastime” as well as their approval of Annabeth.  All that’s left is for AB’s parents to meet George, and I think they’re good to go.  Like I said, everyone is just so happy that it feels like there’s nowhere else to go from here.

Even Lemon and Zoe are starting to reconcile their differences!  I never thought I would have seen the day where Lemon and Zoe actually almost admitted they cared about each other.  Now that they’re both fixtures in Lavon’s life, they’re going to have to get used to being around each other a lot more.  The day they realize they’re basically friends is probably the day the series will end, but at least it’ll be on a good note.

Of course, I can’t go without mentioning Brick.  He’s almost always lost in the mix of the younger kids’ relationship dramas, but you really had to feel for him this week when everyone legitimately forgot his birthday.  Instead of playing it off like they had their impromptu surprise party planned all along, Brick just as easily forgave everyone and enjoyed his party in the end.  Meatball’s rendition of “Don’t You Forget About Me” only added to the classic John Hughes tribute.

Notable quotables:

-”That’s the beauty of our relationship, Lavon.  We never move past this!” -Zoe being childish about her and Lemon’s constant head-butting

-”We cannot sully the sanctity of breakfast!” -Lavon stressing out about his best friend and girlfriend’s differences posing a threat to his most favorite time of day.  I couldn’t agree more, by the way!  Breakfasts in Lavon’s kitchen are always the best scenes.
