If you’ve got to go, going out in a vat of ice cream would seem like an odd way to do it. But don’t tell that to Guillermo Del Toro, because quite honestly that seems to be how he’d want to die, at least with the chance to slurp his way out of course. That’s pretty funny to think of but I can honestly picture a lot of people I know that would probably say the same thing. The only difference would be the flavor of ice cream that everyone would want to go out in. It almost sounds like Del Toro would want to go out in a vat of vanilla ice cream from Japan, though I could be wrong and he could have just been using that for emphasis. Personally I’d like to go out in a vat of mint chocolate chip ice cream if that’s how I had to go. It seems like a really sticky situation to contemplate though. I know, bad pun, mwah mwah mwaaaah.
Del Toro definitely brings up an interesting idea though, especially if you consider that Japan is already known for having some crazy game shows. But think about this, a person would have to eat their way through a block of ice cream or perhaps climb ice cream stairs or some kind of wacky, insane idea that could be used in order to further the goal of the game. Seriously, that seems to be how nuts the Japanese make their games and people love it. As far as eating ice cream you can only stuff so much in your stomach before it has to start coming back out, so an eating game might not be the best idea. But there might be something to it.
I do however wonder now just what makes Japan’s ice cream so great that Del Toro was willing to praise it so much. Some folks might say that ice cream is ice cream but I’d heartily disagree. After all if you go for store-bought ice cream and then actually make your way out to a site like the Tillamook Cheese Factory where they’re known to make their ice cream you can surely taste the difference. It’s almost like the difference between freshly caught seafood and anything you buy in the local deli further inland. There is a HUGE difference. In Japan then there must be a huge amount of emphasis placed on quality since honestly I don’t see how they would compare to some of the stuff we have in the US. Of course having never been there I couldn’t say that with any accuracy, so I’ll have to go by Del Toro’s word on this one.
It is interesting to note however just how different each country makes the same kind of delicacies and what they do to make them so desirable. People in America, those that eat ice cream anyway, tend to enjoy the rich and creamy taste of freshly made ice cream. So I wonder what makes it so good in Japan.
