Grey’s Anatomy tackled a very controversial topic, complete with post-credits PSA, in tonight’s episode. There’s no question that gun control is a hot-button topic, but kids and guns is a whole other monster. The doctors, most of whom are parents themselves, all agree they would do anything to protect their kids.
Two 8-year old boys come into the hospital, one having accidentally shot the other. Evidently one of the boys got into his mother’s lockbox, removed her gun, and started playing with it; because playing with a loaded gun is meant to be “fun”. All of the doctors are shaken up. It sparks a huge controversy among the doctors. Everyone is in agreement that the mother screwed up, as it was her responsibility to keep the gun far away from her child. Amelia focuses all of her energy saving both of the boys; one from paralysis, the other from the guilt of hurting his friend. She does her best, but can’t save either boy from their troubles.
Most everyone is vocal about not wanting to be anywhere near guns, all except Jo. Alex is furious when Jo reveals she owns a gun and never bothered to tell him they had one in their home. Having been shot himself, he has no desire to have that happen again. Jo had her own terrible experience where she needed a gun to protect herself when she was a homeless teenager. It is understandable that back then the gun would make her feel safe. She’s not that person anymore though. She’s in a safe place in her life, so she can protect herself without the gun.
We finally get to see how close Maggie, Meredith, and Amelia are as they raise Meredith’s kids together. Wasn’t it such a treat to see all of Meredith’s kids in the same room? Maggie loves her nieces and nephew so much she feels like another mother to them, which includes all of the fears that come with parenthood. That fear never goes away, all you can do is push through it to cherish the precious moments. Jackson and April know this more than anyone, which is why they are choosing to move past their differences to be there for their child.
Stephanie is now very much involved with her former patient Kyle, played by Wilmer Valderrama. Who can blame her? The minute Kyle wants to move beyond dirty texts, Stephanie stonewalls him. She feels she’s never been good in relationships with actual visceral interactions. If anything Stephanie’s patient is a cautionary tale on this topic. She met her boyfriend online over a year ago and when they finally met, he did not look anything like his picture. Despite this, Meredith pushes Stephanie to give Kyle a chance.
Ben is going stir-crazy after being suspended from the surgical residency program. He decides that rather than die from boredom, he will try to get back his old job in Anesthesiology. Bailey tries to stop Ben from pursuing this, but Ben refuses to be shut out from the hospital, especially from a department his wife does not run. He does get his old job back, but he needs to find another place to sleep for the foreseeable future.
Callie is gung-ho about taking Sofia and moving across the country without consulting Arizona. I’m just going to go ahead stake my vote for #TeamArizona, because Callie’s behavior is absolutely ridiculous. Callie did not even discuss moving Sofia without the intention of the end of that conversation going her way. She did not see that Arizona might have a problem with visiting her own daughter. Lest we forget, this is also not the first time she has tried to keep Sofia away from Arizona. When Arizona cheated on Callie during their marriage (which was inexcusable), Callie tried to keep Arizona from seeing Sofia. Cristina and Meredith had to intervene and tell Callie that she didn’t have the right to do that. In regards to her Callie’s career, Bailey is dumbfounded that Callie would throw away running her own department to chase a resident she hasn’t even known a full year across the country.
Just for clarification purposes, this issue has nothing to do with Penny, which she herself fully recognizes. Penny knows that she is not Sofia’s parent, that she does not get a say in how she is raised. This issue may have come up because of Penny, but she is not to blame for Callie and Arizona’s choices. Sofia has two mothers, two parents who are equally responsible for her, legally and otherwise. Yet still Callie pushes onward thinking Arizona will eventually agree that pulling Sofia away from her mother is the best decision. When Arizona gets a call from a school looking at Sofia’s application, it’s the last straw. Clearly Callie isn’t listening to her ex, so now they can talk through their lawyers.
What are your thoughts on the child shooting? Are you #TeamCallie or #TeamArizona? Which one do you think is really on #TeamSofia?
