Grey’s Anatomy Review: Alex’s Crossroads

Grey's Anatomy

Once upon a time Alex Karev was the disgusting narcissist intern everyone in the hospital thought would flunk out. Since then he’s become a brilliant pediatric surgeon and one of Meredith Grey’s closest friends. He has truly become indispensable to the people who care about him, but they might have to learn to live without him if he goes to prison. On the eve of Alex’s trial the doctors treat patients from a large building collapse. The collapse could have been prevented if the building manager had told anyone about the cracking foundation. Instead his decision to wait cost people their lives. It’s a fitting metaphor for how the Grey’s Anatomy doctor’s lives are going right now, cracking foundations and all.

Owen and Amelia’s honeymoon stage is officially over, and Owen has no idea why. The only good news is that the tension in Owen’s life is bringing him closer to his old friend Riggs. Owen has let go of most of his anger towards Riggs, especially since he can take a step back and remember he has also cheated. Right now Owen really needs someone to lean on, so it’s the perfect time for him and Riggs to bury the past. Owen will need his friend in the days to come. Unable to tell her husband why she doesn’t want children, Amelia leaves Owen.

Because of the collapse it’s all hands on deck. Dr. Minnick comes in before her official first day, which doesn’t give Bailey the chance to tell Webber he is being replaced.  Bailey has had to detach herself emotionally from this decision because she wants to do what’s best for the hospital, but Webber has every right to tear into her. Not for firing him, but for betraying her own morality as a doctor by becoming a Chief all about facts and figures instead of people. Eliza Minnick is a good doctor, but she is not the heart of the hospital, no matter how flirty she gets with Arizona. Let me remind you how awkward Arizona’s potential relationship with Minnick will be when taking into account Arizona’s friendship with Webber. Webber was there for Arizona when her marriage was falling apart, when she wanted to get back into dating, and when she was fighting for custody of Sophia. How is he going to feel about her getting involved with someone coming after his job? The good news is that Arizona gets an early heads up on the situation. For the first time Maggie is personally offended in her father’s defense. She doesn’t say it, but it may actually be the first time that she really thinks of Webber as her father. You can be that offended for a colleague, but this is personal now. Maggie informs Avery of what’s going on (though why the Chairman of the Board was the last to know is ridiculous), and they immediately gather up doctors who can help them protest on Webber’s behalf. Fight the power!

Being subpeoned by a court is hardly comfortable, but for Jo it brings up a genuine concern for her safety. So far she’s gotten away with living under an assumed name, but she may not be able to do that if her name is put through public records. She can’t even worry about how her testimony will affect her friendship with DeLuca or her relationship with Alex because she’s too worried about her safety. With no more time left, Jo tells Alex the whole truth about her abusive husband. The truth sets them both free emotionally, but there are still legal ramifications to deal with. Now Alex was already wavering on whether or not to take a plea deal, but knowing that Jo’s safety could be jeopardy is something else to consider. Ultimately he decides to take the plea, against Meredith’s vehement protests. She’s overwhelmed with back-to-back surgeries, so the best she can do for Alex is a strong voicemail to make him rethink his decision. Meredith has had to say goodbye to almost everyone she cares about, and she’s not about to give up on her best friend without a fight. So Alex has a decision to make, the answer to which we’ll have to wait for till the new year.

Do you think Alex will take the plea?
