The 200th episode of Grey’s Anatomy aired last night, and I have to say they didn’t go the corn ball route and make it something big and cheesy. I appreciate that. We are in the 4th episode of the season and I am totally digging how the show is sticking to its roots. Medicine and soap opera type drama; that’s Grey’s Anatomy. And after 10 years I’m still enjoying every moment.
Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital had serious damage done to her after the storm from the finale/premier. So as a fun way to celebrate the 200th episode, the episode revolves around a Gala to fundraise to fix the hospital. Everyone is dressed to the nines, and schmoozing with the rich.
Meredith and Derek prove that even when they have a new born at home, a surgeon craves surgery. They’ve taken to competing against everything. When Avery announces that whatever department gets the most donations gets a little extra put in their budget, they put on their A game. Meredith flirts and bats her eyes as Derek juggles and brings out the baby for people to swoon over. The baby is a cheap move, man! Of course as soon as an emergency happens they end up in the OR. Last week they were falling over with exhaustion but this week they are wide eyed and bushy tailed looking for some people to cut open and save!
Owen and Christina continue their awkward break up aftermath. They are civil and friendly even, but their dripping weirdness is incredibly uncomfortable to watch. The two go off trying to flirt their way to a bigger donation (like ya do) and there are hints of jealousy but nothing too horrible. Christina tries to convince Owen that the woman he’s hitting on has no money and he would have better luck with an older woman. Meanwhile, she is also flirting with a creeper who ends up writing her a check and then blatantly tells her she should feel bad for flirting for money, and that she should sleep with him for free anyway. That’s just gross, and I loved how she walked away from him laughing at him maniacally. The woman Owen was hitting on ended up being a doctor from a competing hospital in Seattle, and there was some weird chemistry there but it was nice to see him try and move on. I always thought he and Christina were a horrible couple, and Christina is one of my favorite characters of any show.
Callie and Arizona are a bit of a sensitive subject for me. They were the one lesbian couple on TV that hadn’t been hit with horrible problems. They had certainly had a rough road to get to the point of their wedding, but they had a prime time wedding on national TV! That’s huge! It was horrible to watch them last year; you could see them spiraling out of control until Arizona cheated on Callie. There had been anger and fighting, but that was a slap in the face to watch. I understand that Grey’s is a drama and that it’s never fun to watch if everyone is completely happy at all times. But I had such high hopes for them, I truly wanted the relationship to work. To have a positive lesbian couple on TV that shows that two women can make it in a relationship. Its 2013 and this is one of the first, and longest lasting, lesbian couples on TV. I love them, and I really want them to work out for what it would mean to the LGBTQ community, but I think the relationship is too far gone. Callie is even telling people she’s dead while Arizona is in a supply closet getting drunk and crying her eyes out. I don’t have much hope left.
Elsewhere, away from the party at the actual hospital, Bailey is trying to convince Webber not to give up on life. She has an actual fatal case, who is nothing but a raciest bigot, and she is trying to save him anyway. But Webber has just given up. He has the opportunity to get better but won’t put forth the effort; won’t take part in the treatments. It’s not till Bailey moves the annoying old man into his room that he realizes he needs to be the better man. I’ve not understood since this season started why he has just given up on being all alive and what not.
It’s been a good start to the season, and I can’t wait for them to get back into the groove with more medical issues. We only got a glimpse of Alex having daddy issues, and I’m sure that will carry on for a bit. The drama this season started off hot and heavy with no sign of burning out anytime soon.
