The exciting news for fans of the 80s film ‘Gremlins’ is that it is planned for a re-release of the movie before Christmas. The film was originally released in 1984 and was an instant hit. The comedy horror was written by Chris Columbus and directed by Joe Dante. It starred Zach Galligan, Phoebe Cates, Hoyt Axton, Polly Holliday, and Frances Lee McCain. It is about a young man who receives the gift of a strange creature called a mogwai. He is given rules about how to care for the animal and should he break the rules, the cute pet will turn into an evil destructive monster called a gremlin. Of course, he accidentally breaks the room and his cute pet multiplies creating many a whole bunch of little gremlins.
Although the movie was made on a low budget of just $11 million, it was a critical and commercial success taking $153.1 million at the worldwide box office. This success led to the release of a sequel. ‘Gremlins 2: The New Batch’ was released in 1990 and both the director and the main cast from the original film returned to make this sequel which was written by Charles S. Haas.
It is rumored that a third film is in the pipeline. Steven Spielberg has shown an interest in directing the movie and Chris Columbus, the writer of the first film, wants to write the third movie as he wasn’t thrilled with the second film in the series. However, there are no clear plans for production or when this sequel will be released as yet.
In the meantime, fans can enjoy the re-release of the original movie which is set to hit movie theaters on December 8, 2017. Traditionally, ‘Gremlins’ is a film that is repeated on television around Christmas time so it has become associated with Christmas despite originally being released in the June of 1984. As many people now consider this a Christmas film, it makes perfect sense that it is being shown in theaters in December.
While ‘Gremlins’ may also be aired on television, watching this film in a movie theatre is a totally different experience. It allows you to feel as though you are part of the action in the film and visiting the theatre is a much more exciting event than sitting on your sofa at home.
The film is only being shown in selected theaters across the United States, so it is worth checking if you live near one of the theaters where this movie is being shown. December 8th is not the only chance you will have to see the move as those theaters selected to show the re-release will be showing the film right through to December 26th.
If you can’t wait for the release of the new film, then this is the perfect opportunity to recapture your enjoyment of watching ‘Gremlins’ the first time around. Anyone who has children who have never had the pleasure of watching this comedy horror before should also take the opportunity to catch it while they can.
