Great use of Music in Movies: “Layla” in Goodfellas

I’ve mentioned before that Goodfellas is easily in my top 5 when it comes to favorite movies of all-time.  There are only two movies in the entire world that I’ll always mention are in my top 5, a list that always seems to evolve but these two movies always stay there:  Goodfellas and The Shawshank Redemption.  While these two films are entirely different, who cares?  They’re both incredible.  When it comes to Goodfellas, there’s pretty much nothing to dislike about this movie.

The acting is incredible.  The directing is amazing.  How Scorsese got snubbed that year is beyond me.  I still think it’s a crime that he won best director for The Departed and not Goodfellas.  I mean, really?  But aside from the screenplay, directing, acting, and everything else that made that movie great (Samuel L. playing Stacks), one of the biggest elements everyone loved about that movie was the music.

All of Scorsese’s films use music incredibly well but if I had to rank all his films by how well they used music, Goodfellas is far and away number one.  And within the movie Goodfellas it’s hard to top this scene that utilizes the end of the song “Layla.”  I don’t even have to describe the scene because if you saw the movie, you know exactly what I’m talking about.

Anyway, here it is:
