Tina Fey has just received some great news about her new comedy Great News. NBC has renewed the series for a 13-episode second season. Great News follows Katie (Briga Heelan) as she tries to become a new producer while her mother Carol (Andrea Martin) is an intern at the same station after she decides to join the working world. The series also stars Nicole Richie, Adam Campbell, Horatio Sanz, and John Michael Higgins.
Since Great News debuted last month, it has shown somewhat impressive ratings numbers and average 4.3 million viewers for each episode. These numbers are similar to one of ABC’s top comedies Black-ish, which averages 5+ million viewers each airing. Viewership for Great News increases once DVR numbers are included. The latest outing of Great News was around 3.5 million viewers.
NBC has also renewed comedies The Good Place and Superstore. This is great news for the network as they have struggled to find a comedy base after their Must See TV Thursday Night comedy block diminished with the end of Friends and Will & Grace. There is still no word on the status of freshmen comedy Trial & Error. The series started off strong averaging 4.5 million viewers. By the time the series ended its 6 week run, ratings fell to 3 million viewers. If the series does get a renewal, NBC would possibly have an established Thursday Night comedy block with Great News, Superstore, The Good Place, and Trial & Error.
