Gracepoint Season 1 Episode 6 Review: “Episode Six”

Gracepoint Episode 6

Gracepoint is now in the back half of its freshman run, and the mystery’s end is muddled as ever. The characters have become increasingly compelling, however, and the plot has thickened.

This week, the murder suspect list did not decrease in size. Mark and Beth Solano are independently reaching their breaking points. The investigation is giving the facade of progress, but it’s not really getting anywhere. Jack Reinhold is in it deep. Tom Miller meets the creepy lady (Susan. Finally figured out her name). A LOT is happening in Gracepoint, just not any mystery solving.

The acting is growing increasingly stronger as the series progresses. I’m a huge fan of Michael Pena, Kevin Rankin has been brilliant every week, and David Tennant and Anna Gunn have been strong with each passing episode. However, the big acting MVP of this week has to be Nick Nolte. His portrayal of Jack Reinhold has been so layered and just fantastic. I’m really glad he wasn’t the killer, though, because Nolte’s portrayal made me sympathize and care about Jack. I still think the circumstances behind his prior conviction were a tad creepy, but mostly I sympathize with the poor guy. I really do. The scene with Jack and Mark in front of the angry mob was just an excellent scene. SO many good things happening. Sadly, we won’t be seeing much of Jack anymore, but it was a brilliant performance by Nolte for the whole ride.

There was a great moment that the show has been building toward that finally happened this week. Carver and Miller joked! They’ve actually proven that a rapport is being built. I was so relieved when they finally showed that they are increasing the comfort level with each other. I’ve done nothing but be impressed by Anna Gunn and David Tennant this whole time, but they are really growing as a partnership and that’s impressive. What was up with the CSI guy asking Ellie out on a date? I’m curious if that has anything to do with the rest of the show. Weird, right?

I would like to announce that I no longer suspect Tom Miller. However, Tom Miller deserved my suspicions on account of the incredibly creepy and inappropriate company that he keeps. He’s a terrible judge of character, and apparently that is not going to lead to good things for our detective’s only son.

I have some serious suspicions. The creepy lady has always been one, though I can’t believe that the show’s creators would make it that obvious. If it turns out to be her, I will be upset that they gave us two interesting and compelling but completely idiotic detectives. So I don’t think it’s her, but she’s connected to it somehow. Mark’s co-worker also has me suspicious, judging by how quick he jumped on the “Reinhold is a pedophile” bandwagon. Tom Miller is definitely hiding something, I’m sure with 4 episodes remaining that there is plenty we don’t know about some of the characters, especially given how much we learned about Jack in this episode.

Really, the series has been pretty great so far. I think it’s going to make for an excellent binge-watch show (assuming, of course, I approve of the ending). It’s given you anything you could want in a series (aside from zombies and superheroes) and everything it does is done well. The actors are great, the story is compelling, and I REALLY want to know who did it, and what their motivation was. It’s not the kind of show where you just watch the ending to find out the killer, either, because the characters are so compelling, I want to find out what happens to them just as much as who did it.

Ultimately, I’m enjoying the show so far. What do you guys think? Are you still into Gracepoint? Or are you just going to wait until the last episode to find out who did it? Let us know!
