How to Get Away with Murder Review: Something Bad Happened…Again

How to Get Away with Murder, "Something Bad Happened"

How to Get Away with Murder has been pretty powerful since its spring return, so let’s jump right in and take a look at this week’s new episode, “Something Bad Happened.”

The episode opens with Laurel confronting Annalise about the possibility that Wes killed his mother years ago. Annalise tries to convince her that’s it was really a suicide as Wes talks with his doctor about trying to remember for himself. In his mind, he’s under the belief that Annalise had something to do with it since it happened soon after his mother didn’t show up in court, and Eve is brought into the mix in the flashbacks when we find out she also interacted with Wes’ mom. I’m really enjoying the way that How to Get Away with Murder is bringing all of these characters together in different ways than usual, but, as I mentioned in my review of last week’s episode, the Wes/Laurel interaction has been the most fun by far.

Philip is still proving to be a big player in the story these days, and “Something Bad Happened” has our characters having to deal with the aftermath of not giving into his demands. Everything surrounding this story is becoming more exciting than I expected, and we get a really fun sequence in the first half of the episode in which Annalise manipulates the Assistant District Attorney into giving her some immunity. The best thing that Philip has done, though, is bring all of our characters back together. I talk a lot while reviewing How to Get Away with Murder about how great this cast is when they’re all working together, and their work in “Something Bad Happened” is further proof of this. There a great little moment with Asher pulling a prank on the others that I loved, too.

While we haven’t gotten to see quite as much of her as I would like, Famke Janssen’s recurring role of Eve has been so good this season, and her return to prominence in this week’s episode is very welcome. The whole cast of How to Get Away with Murder has always been incredibly strong, but its use of recurring and guest characters in such strong ways is one of the things that makes it stand out among many other shows on TV. I know it probably wouldn’t fit in with the story of the series, but I sure do wish there were a way to get Famke on every week.

I think it’s pretty obvious that I didn’t talk in-depth about the actual events of this episode, but that was definitely on purpose. Much of this episode plays out in unexpected ways, and there’s a reveal at the end that is better without prior knowledge. “Something Bad Happened” was a pretty average episode of How to Get Away with Murder, but that’s a compliment considering how strong most episodes of this show are, and the final reveal brings it up a small notch. We’re very close to the end of the season now, so it’ll be interesting to see where things go from here.
