Watching Game of Thrones and seeing how much some of the characters absolutely seem to hate each other might make you think that off screen that they need time to think and just cool down to avoid any hurt feelings or miscommunication, but you’d be quite wrong. In fact if anything it’s when they’re off screen that they tend to cut loose more often than not, laughing and enjoying one another’s company despite only minutes before being at each other’s throats.
It’s called acting, and it’s almost like a giant game of pretend done for the enjoyment of the masses. The best part about it however is that the actors do genuinely get along behind the scenes and are very much into the entire show. Lena Heady, who plays Cersei Lannister, actually confesses to being a bit of a nerd who absolutely loves zombies. So when the wight jumps out of the box and starts running towards her the meanest woman in the show actually had to suppress a fit of the giggles.
Plus there’s so much else going on behind the scenes, not the least of which is the fact that this is the first time in a long time that some of these actors have been in the same scene together. Think about it, in season one the Lannisters visited Winterfell, so they managed to see Jon Snow and the Starks, but no one else. Brienne and the Hound have worked together onscreen, as have many others that came together in the finale. But never have they all been onscreen together. This is how serious the situation in the show has gotten, that those devoted to being enemies must be drawn together in order to combat a common threat.
The cast all recognize this fact, and are playing their parts with this in mind. Despite that however they are still having a great deal of fun behind the scenes while waiting to shoot. The only ones that don’t seem to be having fun are the Dothraki and Lannister soldiers that continually stand at attention as the shot is being organized. That kind of makes me wonder if they’re being told to remain where they are or if they’re just not given as much freedom as the rest of the main cast.
Without being told and having to guess I wager it would be safe to say that they either don’t fraternize much with the cast or the director is not that forgiving of any of them that do anything without being asked to do so. It seems kind of mean to make them stand about when the rest of the cast are milling around, but then this is show business, which means that extras tend to be replaced rather quickly if they don’t wish to do as they’re instructed.
Whatever the case it looks like the cast know how to unwind between takes. I would imagine this is a good way to spend their free time and shake off whatever tension their lines and roles bring upon them from one moment to the next.
