Game of Thrones’ Emilia Clarke Felt the Spark Between Daenerys and Yara

Game of Thrones

This Sunday’s episode of Game of Thrones may have been the most highly anticipated installment in the show’s history, as Jon Snow’s army clashed with Ramsay Bolton’s in the “Battle of the Bastards.” However, in the days following the episode, one topic has dominated the majority of conversations on the internet, and it has nothing to do with Ramsay’s (spoiler alert) brutal but deserved death by his hounds, or Drogon and his dragon siblings taking down the slave masters in Mereen. Instead, Game of Thrones fans everywhere are talking about Daenerys and Yara’s first encounter and the clear spark that was between the two women during their flirtatious meeting.

Unlike some TV moments that fans read too much into (and then go on to produce pages upon pages about fan fiction about), the energy between Daenerys and Yara during their scene together was not only apparent but also intentional. In fact, the actress who plays the Mother of Dragons, Emilia Clarke, even acknowledged the fun, flirty connection between the two of them in a behind-the-scenes interview.

“There’s mild flirtation, which is exciting to say the least,” Clarke says in the video below. “I mean, get rid of Daario, bring on the ladies. Why not?”

Whether or not there’s ever a real romance between Daenerys and Yara (and why couldn’t there be?), the important thing is that the two of them have finally met and can help each other on their respective quests to rule Westeros and regain control of the Iron Islands. They’re easily two of the most commanding and compelling female characters on Game of Thrones, and it should be incredibly fun to watch them work together as the series moves forward.

Game of Thrones‘ Season 6 finale, “The Winds of Winter,” airs this Sunday at 9 p.m. on HBO. Check out the behind-the-scenes video below to see more of what Clarke and Gemma Whelan, who plays Yara, have to say about their scene together and their characters teaming up.
