Fans of Ghostbusters can rejoice this week. According to io9, this week sees the release of a brand new comic book series, where the Ghostbusters past and present cross over, as well the first chapter of Ghostbusters VR: Now Hiring, a home VR experience that hits the PlayStation Store today. It’s just the latest example of how the franchise is trying to maintain its popularity and relevance despite the film’s disappointment.
I think that from the very beginning many people were skeptical of a Ghostbusters reboot. Having it be all female was certainly a novel idea and a decent attempt at bringing the film into the 2000s but let’s face it: Killing ghosts is killing ghosts. That the movie was essentially turned into a Saturday Night Live featured movie was hardly a best effort. But even though the film was panned in theaters and by critics, Ivan Reitman still thinks that the franchise has a ton of value.
“We certainly would’ve loved to have a larger hit,” Reitman, who produced the new movie, told io9. “But considering the last film was almost 30 years ago, it really did extremely well. I think the film cost too much, frankly, and that’s the real issue. I personally had other points of view in terms of where the film should go and it was kind of a continuous conversation with Paul [Feig] about that. But Paul was the filmmaker on this one and he’s a very talented director. I wanted to give him enough room to do the film he thought it should be. I think Ghostbusters is this wonderful [intellectual property] because it has so many storytelling opportunities,” Reitman said. “And it’s a particularly good one for VR.”
I personally agree 100% with Ivan Reitman here. As far as video games, comic books, an animated TV series, merchandise, you name it, the franchise still has solid potential. I think there’s a huge market out there for the Ghostbusters brand. But I’ll say this about the movie franchise. I have the perfect advice for Reitman and Feig. Ready guys?
STOP DOING MOVIES. PERIOD.
You stick to that advice and everything else is cream cheese.
