43 Halloween Fails From 2026 That Prove Spooky Season Can Serve Up Way More Tricks Than Actual Treats

There’s a reason Halloween is one of the most anticipated nights of the year. Between the candy, costumes, and questionable horror movies, there’s plenty to look forward to. And this year, Americans were already getting into the spirit early. According to the National Retail Federation, nearly half of consumers planned to start their Halloween shopping in September or even earlier. Many simply couldn’t wait, saying they look forward to fall or count Halloween among their favorite holidays.

But when you put that much excitement into one night, there’s plenty of room for disappointment. Maybe the costume doesn’t turn out quite as planned, the party falls flat, or the candy isn’t nearly as good as you remembered. And sometimes, things go wrong in ways nobody could have anticipated.

#1 The Candy I Won’t Be Handing Out Today Because My Wife Called Me A Creep For Being Excited About Trick Or Treaters

First Halloween in years I won’t be working so I bought a bag of candy to give out

When I got it out of the pantry to lay out my wife says “ok creep”

went on to explain that a 47 year old man giving out candy to kids is creepy and I should absolutely not be doing that

#2 My Uber Driver Texted Me “I’m Scared” Then Drove Away & Cancelled My Ride

He arrived, rolled down the window and took straight off. I was just trying to get home from working at my haunted house lol.. best part is, his name was IMRAN. He literally ran. I guess he lives up to his name. Also, Halloween is in 2 days as I’m posting this so I didn’t think this would be so out of the ordinary. My last uber driver wanted a selfie with me, but this guy just straight up ran away.

I couldn’t even explain why I look like this because before I could explain he cancelled my ride and the messages vanished lol.

Also for anyone wondering why I didn’t take it off before getting in the car, im always exhausted and dirty after the shift so my goal is to get straight to my home asap. that’s why I take it all off when I get home.

#3 I Lost A Costume Contest To Someone Who Dressed Up As Themself

I’m kind okay though, at least I got to show people my craft, but knowing the laziest person won is pretty infuriating. But why scream at the judges in anger as if they would listen. Smile, because I got to show people my cool creation.

Part of the reason a bad Halloween feels worse than an ordinary bad night is that more is riding on it than we like to admit. Writing for Forbes, marketing professor Marcus Collins puts it neatly: “This isn’t about costumes and candy; this is about belonging.” That’s why, he says, any parent who has taken their kids trick-or-treating remembers exactly which houses kept their lights off or couldn’t even manage to put out a “take one” bowl. We quietly judge those neighbors and keep score, Collins admits, because opting out signals that you’re not really one of the group.

He goes further, arguing that Halloween comes with a whole set of unspoken rules and social pressures, with spending money essentially becoming the price of admission. And the numbers seem to back him up. The NRF expected consumer spending on Halloween to reach $13.5 billion this year.

#7 Another Kid Punched My Nephews Homemade Costume

I have started to hand make one Halloween costume a year for someone in my family. I’m a novice and it’s just for fun, but I put a lot of effort into them to make them happy. This year I made my nephews. He wanted to be Eddie with venom coming out from the side. I spent days working on it and trying to figure out how to get it to work right.

He wore it to school today (he’s in 5th grade) and apparently one of the special needs kids punched his costume. He also apparently tripped at some point and that may have damaged it more. Two reasons I’m mildly infuriated. First, I’m upset that it got damaged. Second, the school didn’t let anyone know about the incident. And when he tripped today, his gums were bleeding a little (he just got his braces on recently) and they never called his parents about that either.

I’m gonna try to fix it for tomorrow, but they may have to run to spirit in the morning to find something else that may work.

(Yes my house is messy, I’ve been dealing with a lot and have an almost 2 year old and 7 year old)

I want to add, I’m not mad at all at the kid that did it. I’m upset that it happened but I’m mad at the school.

#8 Petty Roommate Destroyed My Pumpkin Because Of A Disagreement

Same roommate that told me I put her in a “toxic living situation” because I’ve been avoiding her..

EDIT: for everyone telling me to move out, trust that the situation is handled. i’m very close with my other roommates so the perpetrator of this is the one that is moving out, and one of my friends is taking over her lease in december. not long to go.

The NRF expected around $4.4 billion of that to go toward costumes, and here, too, there’s pressure. As Collins explains, a Halloween costume is generally expected to reference something other people will recognize. If nobody can work out what you’re dressed as, you’ve either picked something too obscure or failed to make your idea clear. Either way, he argues, it’s a social misstep.

But getting the reference right is only half the battle. Collins points out that a costume can be recognizable and still go down badly within a particular social circle. Dressing as a polarizing politician at a party full of people from the other side, for instance, might get the message across, but probably won’t win you many fans. What the costume says matters just as much as whether people get it.

#13 Bought A Bunch Of Candy For My First Halloween In A New House/State. Got About Six Trick Or Treaters

So, first of all, they don’t celebrate Halloween on Oct 31 here if that falls on a weekend, so Trick or Treat was on Thursday Oct 29. That’s sacrilege #1. Second, kids apparently don’t knock on doors anymore and I was expected to be STANDING OUTSIDE TO HAND OUT CANDY. No. Third, I had decorations up, the porch light on, and the door open… and kids just walked past my house… BECAUSE I WASN’T OUTSIDE. Fourth, they started at like 5 PM and were done by 6:30 PM, because apparently… dark is scary…? IS THAT NOT THE POINT OF HALLOWEEN?

In that sense, Collins sees choosing a costume as a kind of cultural signal, a way of showing that you understand the people around you and the references that matter to them. Then again, as much as you want to fit in, you don’t want to look like everyone else, either. A costume that’s too popular, he notes, is like turning up to a party in the same dress as half the guests. “We want to fit in but also stand out,” Collins writes. That’s not always easy to pull off (particularly if you consider the NRF expected some 4.8 million American adults to dress as witches this year).

#16 Left Out Halloween Treats Fur The Neighbors, Table, Bowl And Even The Cardboard Sign Got Stolen

We do this every year now, for the past 7 years, and this is a first. For some reason the 10$ ikea table, the pumpkin jar we painted and the cardboard sign were too appealing. When I went on the evening to pick it up, only the bats in the door and the tiny spider yarn were left.

Bizarre behavior 😄

But while costumes can be changed, swapped, or cobbled together the night before, the calendar can’t. And if you ask me, the true horror of Halloween is that it isn’t actually a day off. More often than not, it lands right on top of deadlines, exams, and early alarms. A Friday or Saturday Halloween is a welcome reprieve, but anyone who has dragged themselves to work after trick-or-treating with the kids, or after bingeing a horror marathon that ran until 4 a.m., knows how quickly the fun turns into a frightful morning.

And once you’ve survived the costume and the calendar, there’s still the third big C: the candy. It’s the one Halloween purchase almost everyone makes. The NRF found that 96% of shoppers planned to buy it, to the tune of $4.1 billion, and handing it out remains the most popular way to celebrate, with 61% planning to do just that. You can’t go wrong with candy, right?

Ask almost anyone and they’ll tell you their favorite candy doesn’t taste the way it used to. Some of that comes down to nostalgia, as Megan McArdle acknowledges in The Washington Post, but not all of it. This year, Reese’s became the poster child for the complaint after the founder’s grandson accused Hershey of cutting corners on ingredients. The backlash was loud enough that the company promised to return to its classic recipes.

#27 No One Has Got The Costume So Far

So we watched the film recently as it was on streaming and thought it’d make a great Halloween costume, turns out my 60 year old parents who should definitely know better, didn’t get it T-T

And it’s not just the recipes. Bars have shrunk, ingredient lists have grown, and treats are increasingly engineered to last for months on the shelf. McArdle points to the steep rise in cocoa prices between 2022 and 2024 as one source of pressure. Preservatives sound grim, she admits (“who wants their candy embalmed? No one”), but they beat biting into a stale peanut butter cup. In the end, she suggests, the problem could be less corporate greed than human fallibility: companies trying to guess what we want, and not always getting it right.

#29 Stores Completely Replacing Halloween/Fall Sections With Christmas Merchandise And It’s Not Even Halloween Yet

My wife loves everything Halloween so I wanted to make her a Halloween themed goodie basket for our anniversary coming up. TJ Maxx completely gutted the halloween section and stocked Christmas stuff and we’re barely halfway through October 😐

#30 Halloween Treats

I see a lot of stuff end up in the trash, this year I decided to put out a box of coloring books & puzzle books for trick or treaters to also take along with some candy & snacks. I couldn’t sit outside because I had to go somewhere but when I got back, all the Funyuns were gone, all the gummy’s were gone, most of the lollipops were gone but it looks like only a handful of coloring books 🥹 should I have put a sign? Also, any ideas on where I can donate them to?

And really, human fallibility is what this list is all about. Whether it’s a costume you spend half the night explaining at the punch table, a bleary-eyed morning at your desk, or a peanut butter cup that isn’t quite what it used to be, Halloween has a way of bringing out some very human flaws. But maybe that’s part of its charm. After all, if every October 31 went perfectly, we’d have nothing to laugh, vent, or scream about while we eagerly await the next one. Just ask some of the guys and ghouls on this list.

#35 Nobody Came To My Halloween Party

Half the guests cancelled in the time it took me to walk back from the store after buying all the food (and alcohol).

Edit: I know it’s not Halloween yet. This is the week that worked for me.

Edit II: I love y’all. Did not realize Reddit had such a lust for mud pie/dirt. Another friend invited me out for drinks; life is good. AND I have the leftovers. Be well and stay spooky, friends.

#38 Stolen Halloween Decorations

Hi all! Not too sure if I’m allowed to post this but just wanted to express my frustration. My family and I are huge Halloween fans and we love to express it by DIY’ing and putting these decorations up in hopes that it will also bring a smile to anyone that passes by.

I woke up this morning to find some of our decorations missing. The pumpkins that we carved, inflatable pumpkins, graveyard tombstones and our DIY spider are missing. At first, we thought the decorations were misplaced due to wind but we soon realized that was not the case.

We tried our best to secure these decorations by using stakes and I guess the thieves failed to remove our DIY ghosts. I would have never thought that anyone would steal our stuff so we did not mark our names on the decorations.

Any advice on what I can do in this situation? We are asking around the neighborhood for some footage and thinking about filing a police report. Unfortunately, our cameras could not capture the theft as it was blocked by our decorations. (It’s our fault we know)

I’m just super bummed out and Halloween is in 3 days.

#41 What Happened To Halloween This Year? 🎃

Decorated the front of the house, put out pumpkins and lights. Spent a small fortune on sweets/chocolate and we only had 3 knocks on the door. We were really looking forward to seeing some awesome costumes and all the families celebrating and nothing! Popped out with little one for an hour and everyone was dead excited to see us (other halloween houses in the area) and were saying the same, there’s been hardly anyone out.

Totally get it if Halloween, isn’t your thing or you don’t like trick or treaters but what happened!? I feel like everyones ready for christmas waaaay too early this year

Anyways Happy Halloween to everyone who might of been celebrating too!!! Hope your bonfire nights are enjoyable. Stay safe and love to all fur babies!

#42 I Don’t Think Anyone Is Getting My Halloween Costume 🤦‍♀️

thank you for all the likes and comments! I’m glad I found my people. I went to my niece and nephew’s school Halloween festival and out of all the parents there only one couple knew who I was. They and their baby were Nacho Libra the Nun and Hector.
I posted because when I showed friends/ family no one knew who I was and was nervous that maybe I should have went as a cat or bunny instead, I’m glad I went as Napoleon because I felt fabulous and I had a great time!
Again thank you everyone for being so sweet and supportive! I appreciate it! You made this chick very happy! 😃
