Yes, this breed is so large that a since-deceased Great Dane by the name of Zeus holds the world record for the tallest dog, standing at 44 inches from paw to shoulder.
Great Dane dog breed shares a fascinating history. First boarhounds of this size were documented in ancient Greece frescoes dating back to 13th -14th centuries BC and were subsequently very popular hunting dogs throughout Europe. Centuries later, these dogs were imported to England, where the first real Great Danes, then called simply English Dogs, started to emerge, but really took the name only in the 19th century, when the breed found its way back to Germany.
