The end is almost here for the first season of From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series. Over the course of a season, we’ve managed to cover almost the entire plot of the film, and we’ve gotten to see the mythology expand in a phenomenally huge way. We’ve had some great episodes since the series crossed over completely into the supernatural side of the story, and this streak of episodes continues with “Boxman.”
“Boxman” opens with a flashback to the fire Richie and Seth experienced as children that killed their father. Richie imagines this fire as he “awakens” from the bite he received from Santanico, and his visions continue as he sees Monica, the bank teller he murdered earlier in the season. Among Richie’s new abilities is perfect eyesight and healing, and this is shown as the gunshot wound in his hand seals completely before his eyes. Elsewhere in the temple, Sex Machine opens a door that allows him, Seth, Katie, and Jacob to escape to the outside of the bar. As they come out, though, they spy Richie and Santanico stepping into the RV. Seth goes to save his brother while the others return to the tunnels to look for Scott.
In the tunnels, Katie tells Jacob that the visions revealed to her the circumstances surrounding her mother’s death, and the team runs into Freddie, who tells them what happened to Scott. Unfortunately, the Fullers are still determined to see Scott for themselves, and the team again parts ways with Ranger Gonzales. Back in the RV, Richie tries to explain to Seth what’s happening, and it turns out that the door from before didn’t lead outside: it led to a labyrinth of the mind. Seth is now stuck inside the labyrinth/prison unless he can find the center, and the path must take him through the events that brought him to this very moment.
At the real RV, Carlos and Scott look for the money that Seth was supposed to bring. Unfortunately, Seth hid it before Santanico’s dance began. Scott’s loyalty to Carlos wavers after the older man refuses to lead him back to the Fullers, and Scott runs back into the bar alone. Back in the labyrinth, Richie and Santanico explain that the center will contain a way to free her, and that the maze has never been completed in its five centuries. Santanico leaves, as she cannot accompany the brothers in the labyrinth, and the pair begin their quest through time.
In the tunnels, Freddie has caught back up with the Fullers and Sex Machine and is helping them try to find Scott. He explains to Katie that he has been searching for Richie, believing him to be a serial killer, but that recent events have made him think it wasn’t actually Richie who performed the murders. The group runs into some Culebras in the dark, and the team is split in the ensuring fight, leaving Freddie and Jacob in one area with Kaie and Sex Machine in another.
Carlos returns to the temple, and he confronts one of the cult members that he had kept captive. He explains that the Gekko Brothers are trying to set Santanico free and that it is in their best interest if they ensure the Gekkos do not succeed. Meanwhile, as the Gekkos continue their quest through the labyrinth, Katie and Sex Machine take refuge in an alter room. Things take a sinister turn, however, when the professor reveals that his plan all along has been to sacrifice Katie. Freddie and Jacob are saved by a transformed Scott, and Santanico and Carlos have a confrontation in her chambers.
Things have all been building to the final moments of From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series, and the detour through the labyrinth in “Boxman” provided a welcome change of pace that ensures the story doesn’t get stale in this final act.
