From Dusk Till Dawn Season 2 Episode 8 Review: “The Last Temptation of Richard Gecko”

From Dusk Till Dawn

After a great season so far, we’re finally on the last three episodes of From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series. Let’s take a look at what happened in Episode 8, “The Last Temptation of Richard Gecko.”

The episode opens with Malvado in his temple below Jacknife Jed’s. He deals with the problems of the day while Kate is forced by her new compatriots Carlos, Scott, and Sex Machine to kill an innocent in order to complete a ritual. I wasn’t sure what I would think about this new team-up, but this episode helps a lot to sell it to me. Kate has been involved with more characters this season than anyone else, and it’s allowed the actress to show her range in a very positive way.

As revealed in the ending of last week’s episode, Seth and Richie are, indeed, back together, fighting for mutual benefit. Along with Sonja and Santanico, this unlikely team is a lot of fun to see together. The “heist” aspect of From Dusk Till Dawn has largely been pushed aside this season, but the past couple of episodes have brought it back in a huge and successful way.

Much of the second half of this season, just like with the last, has taken place around a bar. This feels played out at times, certainly, but I think that the writers have done enough to help make it seem as new as possible. The new cast of characters and expanded mythology of the show adds to this aspect of From Dusk Till Dawn in a much more noticeable way when we’re at Jacknife Jed.

The special effects and CG work this season of From Dusk Till Dawn has been a huge improvement over last year, and it helps ground the show in a little more realism when you aren’t able to easily distinguish what’s real and what’s fake.

The episode’s final act gives us a betrayal that we’ve kind of been waiting on for most of the season, but it’s delivered in what is probably the best way possible. It also proved some solid action sequences while setting the stage for the final two episode for the season.

All season, I’ve been saying how good this year’s run of From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series has been, and that assessment has been reinforced time and time again as we’ve gone through the episodes. As far as I know, this show has not yet been renewed for a third season, so it’s very possible that the next two episodes will, in fact, be the last we see of Seth and Richard Gecko, Santanico Pandemonium, and all of the other characters that we’ve surprisingly grown attached to throughout the past eighteen episodes. I’m very excited to see where the show leaves us, though, and the final two episodes of the season have the potential to be the best ones yet.
