On his journey, Christopher McCandless meets a variety of people who have an impact on his life. Viewers experience the ups and downs of the greenhorn who is setting out with very little practical experience in wilderness survival. This film stars Emile Hirsch, Vince Vaughn, Catherine Keener and Marcia Gay Harden.
The Revenant
Alejandro G. Inarritu directs Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Hardy, Will Poulter and Domhnall Gleeson in this 2015 film about survival in the frozen wilderness. If you’re a history buff, you’ll appreciate Leonardo DiCaprio’s portrayal of the main character Hugh Glass, famous frontiersman. Glass is mauled by a bear and his own hunting team leaves him for dead. Tom Hardy plays Fitzgerald, the man who stole Glass’ rifle. The film is a hard hitting look at the harshness of living and surviving in the wilderness.
Touching the Void
Touching the Void is a documentary film released in 2003. This is a true recap of the journey that two climbers make on their travel up teh west face of Siula Grande in the Peruvian Andes. The film is 106 minutes and it is a must see for all mountain climbing enthusiasts. The film is a documentation of their 1985 expedition up the mountain.
Alive
Alive is the 1993 film that tells the true story of the Uruguayan rugby team who fell victim to an airplane crash. While flying over the Andes Mountains, the plane experienced mechanical difficulties and crashed into the mountain. The survivors find themselves in a desolate and snow swept mountain scape as they do what they must to survive. Frank Marshall directs Ethan Hawke, Vincent Spano, Josh Hamilton and Bruce Ramsay in this recount of actual events.
Everest
Everest is the true story of climber Robert Edwin Hall of New Zealand, who joined Scott Fischer on an expedition to climb Mount Everest. The film is riveting and very moving. Baltasar Kormakur directs Jason Clarke, Ang Phula Sherpa, Thomas M. Wright and Martin Henderson in the 2015 movie.
