Think back for a moment and remember what it was like to be a teenager. Can you remember? You might have been awesome, you might have been the outcast, but one thing that you should remember is that a lot of people seemed to have this misconception about how you lived and what your life was really like. Some people have called teenagers lazy, disrespectful, and even entitled. It might be true of some folks but on TV the unreality of it all gets ramped up to such an insane degree that the record needs to be set straight finally. TV gets a few too many things wrong about teenagers, and I’m not talking about casting people in their 20’s to play the roles.
You want to know what teenagers are like? Here we go.
5. There’s extra time before school.
There is? Maybe if you wake up a couple of hours before your alarm, meaning that you’ll be waking up when it’s still dark out and most of the neighborhood is asleep without any intention of waking up anytime soon. Kids don’t have that kind of free time in the morning as they have to get up, get ready, get dressed, fed, and everything else that facilitates getting them out the door and to school. They’re like mini-adults without the benefit of a full day’s pay.
4. Teenagers have relationships with their teachers.
No, no, and NO. Kids might find a few of their teachers attractive in their teenage years but that’s where it starts and needs to stop. A relationship between a teacher and a student needs to be just that, a teacher and a student and nothing else. A lot of teens find the idea of getting romantic with a teacher repulsive, while those that are truly over the moon for their mentors are kind of rare.
3. Teenagers never set appointments.
As the years continue to roll by more and more teenagers have found the need for schedules and appointments, and have even found a good reason to keep them. It’s getting to the point that teenagers are starting to realize that in order to get ahead in the world you actually have to be at the top of your game more often than not and honor your commitments. Who knew?
2. Teenagers are embarrassed by their parents.
You ever hear yourself telling your parents that they could drop you off a block away from school and it’d be okay? No? Me neither. The myth that teenagers are embarrassed by their parents is another one that can be chalked up to the rare teen that doesn’t want to be seen in public with their parental units. Most kids really don’t care, their parents are there and that’s the way things are.
1. They still use the term ‘pot’ for marijuana.
If you ask a teen if they want to go smoke pot, shame on you to start with, but they might actually think you mean a literal pot. NO ONE uses that word anymore other than stoners that are stuck in the 60’s and don’t know any other name for it.
Evolve, people. Teenagers are not the figures you see on TV.
