Five Things Movies Get Wrong About Getting Surgery

Movies make surgery look absolutely terrifying, even if some folks know just how wrong these scenes are. Surgery is still a word that scares a lot of people and is considered a very real case of life or death when someone has to go under the knife. In the old days surgery tended to be taken care of in a very barbaric and yet practical manner. If a limb was rotting with gangrene it would be lopped off. If a bullet was lodged in a place from which it couldn’t be retrieved it was left alone. If a person needed something that the doctor had to open them up for they weren’t given the greatest chances to survive. It was as true in the movies at times as it was in real life, but where the two diverge is just how the surgeries were handled and why they were deemed necessary in the first place. Hollywood makes up the reasons as it goes and for the most part makes it just feasible enough to be entertaining and get the emotions flowing.

If they didn’t then people would never endure these kind of scenes.

5. Not just anyone can perform surgery.

Surgeons train for a good number of years to know what they’re looking at, why they’re opening someone up, and what needs to be done while they’re in there. Anyone off the street trying to perform the kind of surgery that is required to save someone’s life or ease their pain could end up cutting something crucial and possibly killing them. So it’s best to have a wide base of surgical knowledge at your beck and call for this profession.

4. Surgery can be more cost-effective than treatment.

It is true that surgery can cost a lot depending on what’s being done and how long it might take and what materials might need to be used. But the fact is that surgery, if needed, can alleviate a lot of costs by taking care of the problem at the root instead of simply allowing the patient to keep treating the symptoms and paying for medication whenever they need it.

3. It is typically the last thing a doctor wants to do.

Surgery isn’t a sign of failure but it is a sign that things have progressed much too far for anything less than a needed operation. Doctor’s tend to try and avoid surgery for as long as they can not so that they can stiff the surgeons with nothing to do, they simply don’t want to perform any unnecessary procedures that might not work.

2. Many people are still worried about scars.

Some folks are really worried about scars. In Hollywood scars tend to be a big thing but can be a boon or a turnoff. In reality the chance of scarring usually depends on what procedure is being done. The typical scar is nothing like it used to be thanks to modern medicine and current techniques that are in place to aid with the healing process.

1. Those in charge will make sure of your comfort, or that you’re out like a light.

You might have heard stories or seen movies about people that were under anesthetic hearing or seeing everything that goes on in the operating room. This can happen but it’s rare and that’s because the doctors will either monitor your pain level if you’re awake and under anesthetic or will make good and sure that you’re out cold.

Waking up during the middle of surgery is something that even the movies can’t make look good.
