Five Things You Should Know about HBO’s “Succession”

HBO’s new drama Succession is already looking like it might be an interesting show to watch. Right away you can see that Brian Cox is going to be back to what he seems to do best, act like an angry and cantankerous old man that would rather snarl at everyone in his vicinity rather than speak to them. That’s great however since Cox is the kind of actor that can get in someone’s face while in character and be completely believable. In this show about a family that’s highly prominent in the news world it seems like his role will be to let his kids know just what’s going one when it comes to HIS business.

It’s going to be a power struggle already, you can feel it.

5. It will focus on one family and their role in the news world.

Those that control the news control the world in a very important manner. Having access to the kind of material and coverage that can give the people of the world what they want and need to see is a type of power that can make tyrants out of saints however, and it seems like Cox’s character is going to be less saint and far more tyrant. His adult children, who are in the business with him, are less than enthused about his continuing role, but don’t have much of a choice since he’s in control.

4. The line of succession in the family is unclear so far.

Obviously in the case of a family like this it’s going to come down to who takes the reins when the old man finally steps away. The only problem is that from the trailer it doesn’t look like he’s going to be stepping away any time soon. That means that succession has to come by other means, and when avarice and intelligence are put together along with ambition that things are going to pop off if a very dangerous way.

3. The old man is downright mean.

It might sound odd to say but that seems to be the charm of the whole character that Cox is playing. He’s not a nice man, but he does everything for his family. He cares about his family, but they’re a little scared of him. Chances are though that they’re more scared of him ruining the business he’s built and threatening the legacy that they wish to take up in his wake.

2. The kids just can’t agree on anything.

Despite being grown adults the kids can’t seem to come to a compromise about anything in the business aside from the fact that their father is slowly and surely going to ruin it one way or another. When it comes to banding together to make sure they can survive with the business intact however they’re not even in the same book, let alone on the same page.

1. The matter of succession is going to tear the family apart.

It’s already being seen that the daughter is speaking to another possible employer, which drives the old man up the wall since he was obviously going to leave his company to his kids no matter how badly he treats them. This family is imploding even as the season starts it would seem, so it’s going to be interesting to see just how the line of succession works in this show.

It’s coming this June, don’t miss out.
