Stephanie Elam’s dream has come true. She has successfully built a career in journalism working as a reporter financial business reporting and works as a reporter and correspondent for CNN out of Los Angeles. Through the course of her career, the San Francisco Bay native has enjoyed reporting for various news outlets including KNBC in Los Angeles and CNN in both New York City and Los Angeles. She has reported on everything from daily financial business and major market turns to Michael Jackson’s death and Pope Benedict XVI.

She was born and raised in the San Francisco Bay area
Stephanie Elam is one of 6 siblings who grew up in the San Francisco Bay region of California. After graduating from Saratoga High School, she ventured to Washington DC to attend the esteemed Howard University. She graduated with a degree in Broadcast Journalism in 1995. Stephanie moved to New York City to follow her dream of becoming a journalist.
She made her name known in finance reporting in NYC
Stephanie Elam’s first job in journalism was as a copy writer for Dow Jones Newswires. She also worked for international wire service Bridge News. With a good grip on financial and business news reporting, Stephanie soon found work for the PBS business news program “Nightly Business Report”. She became an anchor for the nationally syndicated “First Business”, a weekday morning program. Along side her work reporting and anchoring, Stephanie joined WebFN, a streaming financial program, where she was the only regular reporter working out of New York City. She reported daily on “Market on the Close”, a program focusing on the last hour of trade at the New York Stock Exchange.
She joined CNN
CNN hired Stephanie Elam as a financial reporter working out of New York City in 2003. She regularly reported on business financial news for CNN from 2003 through 2011. She reported for the program “Money Team Reporter”, “American Morning” and the weekly program “Your Bottom Line”. Elam co-hosted “Black Enterprise Report” from 2005 through 2007. She also worked as a reporter and correspondent for Headline News and CNN International. Through her years at CNN, Elam has reported mostly on financial news but also popular culture events.
Los Angeles
In 2011 Stephanie Elam moved from New York City to Los Angeles with her husband. She married Jeff Rush, an investment banker, in August 2008. Their daughter was born in 2010. Once in Los Angeles, Stephanie Elam took a job as weekend anchor and general assignment reporter at LA’s KNBC station so she could spend more time with her young daughter.

Stephanie Elam returned to work for CNN in 2013. The correspondent still reports on business and financial news, but is also a general correspondent who covers major national and international stories. Since her return to CNN, Elam has covered major stories including the shooting death of unarmed Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, LA Clippers’ Donald Sterling racist remarks scandal, the shooting death of a TSA officer at Los Angeles International Airport, the devastating Moore, Oklahoma tornado and the deaths of 19 firefighters in Arizona. Elam continues to report for CNN on a variety of topics as she enjoys motherhood living in the Los Angeles area.
