Five Things You Didn’t Know about Soledad O’Brien

Soledad O’Brien is the product of an interracial marriage that was considered illegal before 1967, so her parents were married in Washington DC in 1958 due to the laws being a little less strict. Soledad, who’s name means ‘The Blessed Virgin Mary of Solitude’ was born in St. James, New York on the north shore of Long Island. She’s been a driven woman for most of her life and has done a lot of great things as an American broadcast journalist and executive producer.

People have suggested she change her first name but she’s refused without question, which is great.

5. She’s a Harvard graduate.

There’s no lack of intelligence in her family as her parents managed to push their children just enough that they were able to find their own paths and become who they wanted to be. Barring that it’s likely that her siblings went on to do what they wanted at least and made themselves somewhat successful. Soledad made her way to Harvard eventually and created the kind of life she wanted to live.

4. Her parents are both immigrants.

Her father is from Toowoomba, Queensland in Australia and her mother came from Havana, Cuba. Despite getting married in Washington DC to avoid being persecuted for their union they eventually moved to Long Island, New York. There they raised their six children to the best of their ability while doing what they could to provide for them. Seeing as how her father was a mechanical engineer and her mother a teacher it’s not too hard to assume where Soledad got her drive and intelligence from.

3. She went back to school while pregnant with her first child.

Any woman can tell you that being pregnant is not an easy thing to go through even if the nine months that they’re carrying their child is a breeze. Going to school at the same time however becomes a grind after a while as the average seats that are used in classrooms are not entirely comfortable to women that are packing the extra weight of a child along with them. It’s impressive but also sometimes kind of cringe-inducing to think of what they must be going through trying to gain their education and stay comfortable at the same time.

2. She started her career as a medical reporter.

She got this position mostly because she was premed for a while and as such she could report with a good deal of accuracy on the situations and content that was desired. This isn’t where she stayed however as her career would take her to new heights and a level of notoriety that has eventually brought her to the level she enjoys now. Sometimes simple beginnings are the best since they can lead to something so much bigger.

1. She enjoys riding horses as a hobby.

She’s enjoyed riding horses since she was a girl and now enjoys the hobby with her family as well. It’s something fun and engaging to take part in so long as one can afford the expenses.

So far it seems that Soledad has led a very remarkable life.
