Five Things You Didn’t Know about Richard Cabral

It’s a little hard to just up and leave the past behind you but Richard Cabral has been trying to do just that. Born into a family that was heavy into gang activity Richard has worked hard for the last several years to put that life behind him and create something positive out of it in order to not only show others what can become of someone if they try, but also to tell his story and relate his experiences through film and TV. So far he’s done exceptionally well in sticking to a much less intense lifestyle and focusing on his acting career, which is a positive upswing that he no doubt wants to continue. He’s appeared on Lethal Weapon, the TV series and several other shows throughout his career thus far and should be someone to watch in the coming years as he continues to grow as an actor.

Here are a few things you might not know about him.

5. He came from a family active in gang activity.

Richard didn’t have much of a chance to avoid the life since his family was into and a lot of kids that experience this early on have a tough time either staying out of it or just staying away from the gang life. It’s a harder life than most and doesn’t offer a lot of chance for personal growth and development in a healthy and sustainable environment, but people do somehow get by.

4. He was incarcerated at age 13.

Richard stole a wallet for his first noted offense and eventually got hooked on cocaine by the age of 15. He did manage to get his GED but got in trouble again and was charged with assault with a deadly weapon. He didn’t get out again until he was 25, and by that point he was trying to think of ways to do something with his life other than belonging to a gang.

3. He began his acting career in 2009.

He was told by friends that he should seek out Homeboy Industries, a gang-intervention program in LA. It was there that he started learning how to act. It’s pretty obvious that he took very well to it and by 2009 he was making an appearance in the TV show Southland. Not long after that he managed to secure a role in the Bruno Mars video for Grenade.

2. He was nominated for an award in 2015.

After playing a role in American Crime he was nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or Movie. Had he won this would have been his first Emmy. Even though he didn’t win however he remained undaunted and continued forward as he kept taking roles. He’s still currently acting and taking on roles as they come.

1. He co-wrote Fighting Shadows.

The show, which he wrote with Robert Egan, is about a man that goes in and out of prison and has to deal with the constant struggles that come from being incarcerated and being free.

I think it’s safe to say that Cabral has really turned his life around.
