Five Things You Didn’t Know About OWN Network’s “Queen Sugar”

In our entertainment world today, there are a few shows out there that really hit home, and that tell a wonderful story. Some of these projects that take shape today for audiences all over are actually derived from best selling novels, and the same goes for the hit OWN Network series “Queen Sugar”. The show is about to enter into its third season on the airwaves, and what better time than now to reveal five things that you may not know about the show. With that said, let’s get started with our count down.

Based On A Novel

As we eluded to before, many other entertainment projects that are making their way to audiences everywhere in recent years, “Queen Sugar” is also adapted from a novel of the same title. The novel was written by Natalie Baszile, and it actually took ten years for her to write and really completely finish.

Getting to HARPO And The OWN Network

We mentioned just above that the series is based on a novel of the same title, and the surprising beginning of the show, and the book’s, success and debut is quite intriguing. The book was not fully published on released to the world until 2014, almost two decades after Baszile first began writing the story. Only a few months after the book was released, execs from the OWN network began working to make a deal to turn the book into a project, and the rest is history.

Woman Power

With all of the issues of equality surrounding the world, it is a light at the end of the tunnel to see that some projects are working to give women higher and more prominent roles, both in front and behind the camera. The same is for “Queen Sugar” which has been led by an all female directorial team from the beginning back in 2016.

Storyline

In case you haven’t tuned into the series, or read the book, already, the story of the show follows the lives of three estranged siblings (two sisters and a brother) who are finding their way in the world after inheriting their father’s sugarcane farm after his passing.

The Show Has Major Success

Not only is it telling a heartfelt, dramatic, and relatable story, but the show is just showing major success on all fronts. Before the show even made its debut on the OWN Network for the first season, it was renewed for a second season (and trust us, that can be difficult for new and upcoming shows that are just hitting the airwaves!).

We think it is safe to say with this list that “Queen Sugar” should definitely be a front runner of shows that you need to binge watch and catch up on. The show itself shows so much diversity, relatability, and other textural elements that make it so unique and amazing for the time that we are in. The third season of “Queen Sugar” is set to debut in a two night season premiere which will take place on May 29th and 30th on the OWN Network, so make sure to set your DVRs and tune in to this amazing series.
