The success of Deadliest Catch was totally unprecedented. The Discovery Channel truly hit a jackpot with that one, and it only made sense for the network to try to replicate that success through a spinoff. This spinoff came 11 years later with Deadliest Catch: Dungeon Cove, and although it’s difficult to follow in the footsteps of such a giant, Dungeon Cove had enough promise to stand on its own eventually. It’s been two years now since we saw the premiere of the show, and even though it’s been that long, there are still a few things you can learn about this spinoff. Here are five things you probably didn’t know about Deadliest Catch: Dungeon Cove.
Different location
Obviously, the spinoff is filmed in a different location. Dungeon Cove is actually located in Newport, Oregon along the edge of the infamous “Graveyard of the Pacific.” This fishing locale stretches form Oregon to British Columbia, and it’s one of the last remaining towns there. It’s a far distance from the original locations of the Bering Sea, but the dangers are just the same, if not worse.
Dungeness crabs
The focus of Dungeon Cove is Dungeness crab fishing instead of the Alaskan king crab. There’s a huge market for Dungeness crab in North America, and its actually one of the more popular crab species for eating. This species is considered to be the king of the West Coast and is found primarily in the cold waters of the Pacific Ocean. This species is what maintains and drives the economies of many fishing towns along the California, Oregon, and Washington states.
Dungeness Crab Derby
If you’ve never heard of it, let us tell you that the Dungeness crab derby exists, and the show actually follows the crab fishermen partly through their journey on the competition. The Dungeness Crab Derby is one of the last remaining derby format fishery competitions in the world. It’s a big deal in that area, and it’s one event that also attracts so many people from all over the world.
The family difference
One of the biggest differences between Deadliest Catch and Dungeon Cove is the involvement of the family. When fishermen from the original show would go out to sea for months, they would be so far from family that their experiences are their own. On Dungeon Cove, the families on land experience exactly what the fishermen experience out on the ocean. So if there was a storm coming, everyone was going to feel it, not just the fishermen that are out fishing. The families also have more screen time compared to Deadliest Catch.
Season 2
The first season felt extremely short at only 7 episodes. The show lasted just for under 2 months before the season ended. That happened in 2016, and so far, the Discovery Channel has yet to cancel or renew the show for season 2. We’re thinking that they might’ve been using season 1 as a feeler. It got enough viewership to say that it did well, but we’re not sure if it was enough to get a sophomore season. All we know is that anything that has Deadliest Catch on its name will be a good watch. We’re still waiting to hear about Dungeon Cove season 2, and we’re hoping that when we do it’s for a renewal and not a cancellation.
