The Korean actress Choi Hee-seo has starred in a number of high profile movies lately and she is getting recognised for the quality of her acting. The chances are that you will be seeing a lot of her in the coming months and years but here are some facts that you may not know about her.

People Often Mistake Her For Japanese

She spent a lot of her early life in Japan and as a result has picked up a lot of the dialect. Her features also make her look Japanese. She has made her name playing Japanese characters in some of her best known movies and so it is not difficult to see why people are sometimes mistaken. She has certainly be able to use this to her advantage during her career although she has never tried to hide the fact that she is from South Korea.

She Made Her Debut In Lifting King Kong

Her acting debut came in the 2009 movie Lifting King Kong. It is based on a true story and portrays how Olympic bronze medalist weight lifter Lee Ji-Bong comes back from his lowest point after injury forces him to retire. Hee-seo plays a student who is part of a weight-lifting team that Ji-Bong puts together from a group of students who are considered to be outcasts. She received a lot of attention for her role in this movie and it had lead onto greater things for her.

She Met Shin Yeon-shik On The Subway

The movie that provided her with her big break was Dongju: The Portrait of a Poet which was produced by Shin Yeon-shik. He spotted Choi Hee-seo on the subway and noticed her because of her Japanese looks. When he discovered that she could speak Japanese fluently he recommended her for the part of a Japanese girl in the movie. Director Lee Joon-ik agreed with him and cast her in the supporting role of a Japanese woman that helps a Korean poet during the war.

She Won Two Awards At The Daejong Film Awards

She won two awards for her role in Anarchist at the Daejong Film Awards in 2017. She has become one of the only actresses in history to win the award of Best Actress and Best New Actress for the same role. This is even more impressive considering that she is at such an early stage in her career. She has said that she feels a greater responsibility to keep putting in the kind of performances that will win her awards now that she is a bit older and further along in her career.

She Is Also Known As Moon Choi

Her birth name is Choi Moon-Kyung and so she is sometimes referred to as Moon Choi. This is not the name that she is known Best by professionally and it is only really used in a casual context nowadays. There is some of her work where she has been credited as Moon Choi but this was earlier on in her career.
