Five Things You Didn’t Know about Alex Borstein

Alex Borstein is an American comedian who has done a lot of acting, writing, and producing over the course of her career. Primarily, she is famous for providing the voices of Lois Griffin as well as a number of other characters on Family Guy, but it is important to note that she is much more than just one series. For proof, look no further than the fact that Borstein played an important character on The Marvelous Ms. Maisel, which has just come out on Amazon Video.

Here are five things that you may or may not have known about Alex Borstein:

Her Parents Are Mental Health Professionals

Both of Borstein’s parents are mental health professionals. In particular, it is interesting to note that Borstein’s mother Judy was raised in Budapest, Hungary but moved to the United States because of the Hungarian Revolution of 1956. For those who are unfamiliar with the event, said revolution was crushed by the Soviet Union, which resulted in 200,000 Hungarians fleeing as refugees.

Trained at the ACME Comedy Theater

At the ACME Comedy Theater, Borstein trained in the fine art of improv. It was there that she met her future husband Jackson Douglas, who went on to become her writing partner as well. The two have two children with one another, but unfortunately, Douglas filed for divorce in October of 2014, meaning that they have since gone their separate ways in spite of a long marriage.

Best-Known for Lois Griffin

Over the course of her career, Borstein has performed in a wide range of roles as a voice actress. In fact, it should be noted that she started out by providing the voices for various characters in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, Power Rangers Zeo, and Big Bad Beetleborgs. However, Borstein’s most famous role as a voice actress is Lois Griffin in Family Guy, so much so that it is no exaggeration to say that it overshadows the rest of her accomplishments from time to time.

Cast as Sookie St. James in Gilmore Girls

With that said, Borstein has been a non-voice actress in a surprising number of movies and TV shows. One example is how she was cast as Sookie St. James in Gilmore Girls, which fans of the series might remember as having been played by Melissa McCarthy. This happened because Borstein had a contract with MADtv, with the result that she wasn’t able to continue in the role. Still, Borstein managed to make a few appearances on Gilmore Girls anyways in a number of other roles.

Main Cast Member on The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel

One of Borstein’s current projects is The Marvelous Ms. Maisel, which is a comedy-drama that is being distributed through Amazon Video at the moment. In it, Borstein plays Susie Myerson, an employee at a comedy club who is helping the titular character to hone her comedy act after her struggling comedian of a husband ditched her after having an affair. So far, The Marvelous Ms. Maisel has received a positive reception for the one season that was released on November 29, 2017.
