So much can be said about this show, most of all just how violent and unnerving it can be and then how true to life it might actually stay to the time period. It’s been one of those shows you either get into or you don’t, as it’s not geared for every viewer. But when you get right down to it most shows aren’t geared for everyone, as it’s all a matter of personal preference and what strikes your fancy. Boardwalk Empire though is brutal. It’s a show that pulls not a single punch and let’s you know just where you stand when the bullets stop flying and the smoke finally clears. If you’re the one standing, then you know you were on the winning side.
Here are some of the best scenes from the show.
5. Jimmy’s Revenge
It takes a cold-blooded person to sit down and have a chat with a person they know they’re going to kill. Most people who know they’ve been marked would either sit there with their heart pounding away a mile a minute, or they’d at least try to run. Of course running isn’t the best option because Jimmy would have taken the shot or the shooter across the way would have. Either way, game over.
4. Jimmy’s Death
Too much bad blood over business dealings and other matters makes it almost impossible for people with serious trust issues to just ‘get over it’. Jimmy knew that he’d run afoul of Nucky no matter the relationship between them and there was no way Nucky was going to be able to just let it slide. Not fearing death didn’t make a big difference to Nucky, and in some ways it almost seems like Jimmy welcomed it.
3. Nucky Thompson’s Death
A life spent doing ill to others will eventually catch up a person one way or another. How it does so is anybody’s guess, but in the case of Nucky Thompson it happens with a note of revenge that is finally taken by Jimmy’s son Tommy, who has found a way to avenge his father’s name. It seems a poor way to die but on a show like Boardwalk Empire it’s about the only other option aside from a natural death.
2. Dr. Narcisse’s Death
You don’t cross the mob and just hope to get away with it. Back in the glory days of the Mafia it didn’t matter where you were or how many people were around you. If you owed a debt or were marked in any way it was going to happen. You were bound to get your ticket punched and the guys doing it wouldn’t care if God Himself was in attendance. Narcisse learned this the hard way.
1. Rothstein losing at poker
It’s about more than the poker game obviously, but calling for a marker of any size with a guy like Nucky is just asking for trouble. I don’t care how bad you think you are, it pays to know the odds and what it means to defy them if you lose. Rothstein was a horrible poker player, and a worse judge of a situation.
There are so many great moments in this show that it’s kind of impossible to list them all. Feel free to chime in with a few .
