The Oscars are over, and some people who are not happy with how things turned out, but we will not get into that now. The good news is that there are some great films on the horizon. One movie that we are absolutely looking for is the film that critics are labeling “the ode to motherhood” – Tully. There are so many reasons that we want to see this film from the storyline to the underlying message. A few automatics that register big on the following list that should be considered no-brainers, but then, there are some more subtle but significant reasons why this film will likely make the Oscars list for 2019. We will start with the more obvious reasons and work our way down.
The Movie Stars Charlize Theron
Let’s just keep it real here. Name one film that Charlize Theron has appeared in that she has not nailed. My favorite is Snow White and the Horseman, but the list of movies that she has graced with her talents is almost endless, and she is just now entering her prime. The full-length trailer for this movie allows you to see Theron is a non-glamourous role and she totally sells it. She plays a mother of three kids who feels underappreciated and overwhelmed – until Tully, her new night nanny, gifted by her brother, shows up on her doorstep.
The Film is Directed by Jason Reitman
Everyone knows that the right director will add substance and clarity to a film in there own unique way. Jason Reitman is very masterful at being able to put his imprint on a movie while allowing the stars in the move is shine. Reitman and Theron will be reuniting, having already worked together on Young Adult, another successful film. Reitman will also be reuniting with screenwriter, Diablo Coty who wrote Young and Adult, as well as another film Reitman directed, Juno.
You Will Almost Immediately Connect With the Movie
No matter who you are, there is a person in this movie that you can relate to in multiple ways. Every wife and mother who is expected to be Super Woman will relate to Charlize’s character. The film literally oozes with empathy and challenges the audience to feel the same empathy for the main characters as she attempts to manage a new baby along with her two existing children all while attempting to satisfy the needs and desires of her husband. Tully comes into the picture and not only helps but shows the Marlo (Charlize’s character) that she still has a lot to be grateful for despite what she is currently experiencing.
Moments of Dry Humor
Sometimes, a film can be so laden with heavy messages that it becomes monotonous and you become weighted down within in the first 20 minutes of the movie. This film has little jewels of comedic impact all throughout the story. My favorite is when one of the children accidentally spills something on Marlo’s blouse, and she hurries to take it off, revealing her pregnant belly. Right on cue, the little girl asks, “Mom, what is wrong with your body.” The look on Marlo’s face is priceless.
Mothers Finally Get Their Moment
I personally believe that the toughest job on the planet is that of a mother. As a father, I have my daily challenges, but my wife has to make sure that I am okay while being responsible for turning infants into functioning adults that must face a world that is poised to devour them if they don’t perform at a high level. Even with both parents in the home, this is a daunting task, but imagine the many women who do this as single parents. Here is to the mothers who make it look easy.
