These days, it seems like it’s a little difficult to find innovative television shows that are a little more edgy than some of the more traditional options. That being said, there are some good choices out there and Orange is the New Black has proven to be extremely popular with audiences. As a matter of fact, they have completed their sixth season and it’s every bit as good as the first five previous seasons. If you’re not completely familiar with the show or you’ve got some catching up to do, you can check out five of their best episodes during season six by reading below. There’s even a YouTube link to each episode so you can see a few minutes of it for yourself. Before you know it, you will probably be binge-watching every single episode you haven’t already seen three or four times over.
1. Nicki Finds Her Voice
This is a special episode because Nikki is finally in a place where she’s not willing to let someone else push her around. Instead, she’s much more likely to find her voice than simply roll over and let other people walk right across the top of her. This is a pivotal moment because she spent much of her life being something of a doormat. It resonates with the audience because there are so many individuals who spend their lives trying not to upset other people, and as a result they become doormats themselves. There’s nothing more frustrating than having your voice taken away from you, except for allowing it to happen. When Nikki finally stands up for herself, everyone that’s ever found themselves in this type of situation feels the liberation that automatically comes with standing up for what you believe in and refusing to let people push you around.
2. Blanca’s Breakdown
Perhaps the reason that this one tugs at the heartstrings so much is because everyone has a tendency to admire the strong person that doesn’t really show their emotion just because things get a little difficult. Blanca is definitely that person. However, when she thinks that she’s going to be set free early and then everything falls through, she completely breaks down, weeping openly. Again, this is something that everyone can identify with. No matter how strong a person is, there is something that is capable of breaking them and when they come into contact with it, even the toughest individuals in the world become just as human as the rest of us.
3. Aleida Sees Her Children
One of the hardest things about being incarcerated is being separated from the people you love. In Aleida’s case, she is separated from her children. This has to be an exceptionally difficult thing for a mother to endure, and her raw emotion is seen when she has the opportunity to see her children, but only for a short time. Watching her deal with the reality of her incarceration and how her relationship with her children has changed is painful enough. Seeing it all come to a premature end when she’s whisked away because her time is up makes it even more difficult, all because those loose ends are often what hurt the most.
4. Getting High
This is an almost perfect scene involving what it’s like for many to deal with teenage angst, not to mention the poor decisions that are often made when a person doesn’t have the life experience to make sound choices. In the scene, Timica and Tastee, who are best friends, decide that they hate their jobs and the only way to make it better is to get high. What better place is there to get high than at a job you can’t stand? The scene is light-hearted at times, but it has a much more serious undertone. Perhaps it’s because it’s so very closely related to reality that it feels so very heavy at times.
5. Rats Everywhere
What do you do when you’re in prison, you’re bored, and you hate every minute of it? Maybe you want to stick it to the people who are controlling the facility. What better way to shake things up than to get a bunch of rats and set them free in the kitchen. That’s exactly what happens in this episode.
