Five Movies That Truly Capture the City of San Francisco

When movies decide to showcase a certain city it’s usually a lot of fun if you happen to live near or in the same place. The one thing you look for is anything or anywhere that might be familiar and then it’s a kick to realize that these places that are being shown are the same places you’ve likely been to at least once or a dozen times in your life. San Francisco, CA is one city that has been featured numerous times in film and is always a kick to see represented since it’s such an interesting area.

Here are just a few films that have used the city to their greatest advantage.

5. Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home

There’s always some simple solution, well, some fairly ridiculous solution at least, that seems to make the Star Trek universe set itself aright once again. In the most recent film it was blasting the Beastie Boys at the enemy to make them explode. In part four of the epic series it was the song of humpback whales that ended up saving the earth and everyone on it. Like I said, simple but somehow ridiculous.

4. The Rock

You get to see plenty of the city and one of its most famous landmarks, The Rock, or Alcatraz Island in other words. From Alcatraz a band of soldiers plans to take out the city using the most nefarious weapon ever created, unless their demands of military benefits paid to the families of their fallen brethren are met. So let’s send in an aging spy and a lab tech, why not? At the very least it was action-packed and fun to watch.

3. Mrs. Doubtfire

Some people will go to any lengths to see their children when they’ve been given only joint custody after a particularly painful divorce. Somehow though I don’t see something like this happening unless the individual is that good of an actor and we’ve just stepped into a parallel universe. Most guys that have done what Daniel did would be locked in jail or the psych ward at the very least.

2. Rise of the Planet of the Apes

So how do we make sure that humanity has no chance in the coming years? Forget taking each other out, we’ll make apes and chimps smart and they’ll take care of the problem for us. Of course if humans respected their simian cousins a bit more they might find that there’s a possibility of living together instead of tearing at one another relentlessly.

1. Inside Out

Poor Riley. She loved her home in Minnesota so much that moving out to picturesque San Francisco was a massive culture shock. If you can remember your younger days then you can relate to this movie without any issue. Every emotion is accounted for and the awkwardness of being the new kid in town is a feeling that a lot of us have gone through at one point or another.

San Francisco has its ups and downs like any city, but from afar it’s quite beautiful.
