Accounting doesn’t exactly have the most exciting reputation. After all, most of it looks like it consists of crunching numbers and double-checking lines, which is not the sort of thing that gets the heart racing. However, it is important to note that accountants are so ubiquitous that they can get caught up in all sorts of shenanigans, which actually makes them surprisingly well-suited for appearances in action movies and the like.
Here are five movies that made accounting seem exciting:
D.O.A.
D.O.A. is a classic example of film noir. In brief, it stars an accountant named Frank Bigelow, who has been poisoned for reasons unknown to him. Instead of spending his last moments on something else, he chooses to hunt down his mysterious killer so that he might exact vengeance upon them, which is a process that comes with more than its fair share of twists and turns. In the end, it turned out that his poisoning was indeed connected to something that he had done in the course of performing his routine duties and responsibilities as an accountant.
Midnight Run
In Midnight Run, a bounty hunter named Jack Walsh sets out after an accountant named Jonathan Mardukas, who didn’t just embezzle $15 million from a mob boss but also skipped out on the $450,000 bail posted for him. Interestingly, Midnight Run had action but chose to provide its narrative with a fair amount of comedy based on the interaction between Charles Grodin and Robert De Niro, which might explain why the movie ended with both men in a much better position than before their shared experience.
The Accountant
Brad Pitt starred as the titular character in The Accountant. Unsurprisingly, he is an accountant. To be exact, he is an accountant who specializes in forensic auditing, which tends to be a rather more exciting field than the rest of his chosen profession. Furthermore, he is a forensic accountant who helps less-than-upstanding enterprises audit their own operations, which is how he manages to get into serious trouble of the kind that gets resolved in action thrillers via repeated applications of violence.
The Shawshank Redemption
Andy Dufresne is an accountant who gets framed for a crime that he didn’t commit before being sent to prison, where he uses his financial talents to help the warden launder money so that he will be protected from prison brutality. He swallows year and years of ill treatment. However, he never gives up hope, as shown by the fact that the movie ends with him having made his escape by digging a tunnel out of the prison with nothing more than a spoon.
The Untouchables
Al Capone was one of the most famous crime bosses operating during Prohibition, but it is important to note that he went down because of tax evasion rather than one of his other numerous crimes. As a result, it should come as no surprise to learn that the team brought together on The Untouchables included an accountant named Oscar Wallace, who works with the other team members to find Capone’s bookkeepers so that a case can be built against him.
