There are very few films and television series that have been privileged to occupy space within Windsor Castle during production. It is, after-all it is home to the Queen, but this hasn’t prevented the filming of documentaries nor the use of footage and exterior shots from being included. In many films and television series, what appears to be Windsor Castle is actually footage shot from another location and made to look like Windsor. We were able to find five movies and television series that include scenes shot at Windsor Castle.
“The Queen’s Palaces: Windsor Castle” (2011)
This is a documentary series that is narrated by Fiona Bruce. She visits with largest and oldest inhabited castle in the world which dates back in time to the eleventh century The “Windsor Castle” episode takes us on a guided tour of the castle where we learn some fascinating facts about its history and the people, who through the centuries, have lived, loved, fought, ruled and died there. We also learn about the great fire in 1992 that damaged large portions of the castle.
“Windsor Castle: A Royal Year” (2005 TV Movie)
Barbara Flynn narrates this 3 hour documentary/reality TV movie about the Queen of England, Windsor Castle, family relationships and royal weddings. The film includes footage of Windsor Castle, located at Windsor, Berkshire, England in the UK, Windsor Great Park and Windsor, Berkshire. It was made for RDF media in the UK and PBS of the United States. In the film, we learn about every aspect of life in teh castle from the exterior to the interior. We’re frequently joined by Prince Phillip, and are entertained by his tour of the countryside that surrounds the castle.
“Victoria’ (2016-current)
“Victoria” is a television series in the drama, biography and history genre. It is a dramatization of the life of the Queen, set in the 1800s. Movies and television series are not usually filmed on the grounds of Windsor Castle, but there were a few shots of the castle, along with Buckingham Palace that were allowed for the making of this television series. CGI technology was used to give the scenes the authenticity of the 1800s era.
“Inside Windsor Castle” (2017)
This amazing documentary is a four hour exploration of the history of Windsor Castle over the past 80 years. This biographical history film is a television series that uses dramatic recreations along with interviews and the use of archived materials to bring the stories of the people who have lived within the castle walls to life.
“Princess Diana: In Search of Happiness” (1997)
This film is a 48 minute documentary of the life of Princess Diana of Wales. It’s a portrait of her life as a modern and fascinating woman who rose to tremendous popularity despite the turbulence and heartbreak that she endured while living as a member of the Royal Family. This documentary shows several clips of the interior of Windsor Castle.
