Five Great Movie Scenes Shot at the Grand Canyon

Ah, the majesty of the Grand Canyon, the absolute beauty of the scene, and the great opportunity for film to capture some of the funniest and most iconic scenes that have ever been devised. There are a lot of picturesque locations throughout the world that could boast the kind of scenery that’s to be found in those movies that visit this natural wonder but the sheer scope of the Grand Canyon is something that people all over the world have come to witness and can easily recognize when it’s captured in a movie. The Grand Canyon runs about 277 miles long, is roughly 18 miles wide at some points, and is over a mile deep in some areas, making it one of the greatest geological wonders throughout the world. Is it any wonder that film makers might want to use this impressive sight to make their movies a little more impressive?

Just the sight of it is enough to take your breath away.

5. Thelma & Louise

Thelma and Louise are both on the run from lives that they didn’t want, and despite that what they’ve done is wrong there might have been a chance  that they could find a way out of it. But now that they’re fugitive, thieves, and wanted murderers there’s really nowhere to go and nothing to do but keep driving. The choice between dying free and living in chains doesn’t seem too hard to them at this point.

4. Joe Dirt

This would be one of the most hard-luck cases you could think of being stranded at the Grand Canyon. Joe Dirt was a decent enough kid with a horrible upbringing but certainly he didn’t deserve being left all alone at a tourist site to fend for himself. Somehow though little Joe managed to make his way along in life and still keep that strangely upbeat attitude.

3. Planet of the Apes

The desert scenes in this epic masterpiece should be fairly recognizable. Planet of the Apes was something of a controversial film in its time as well as now since it tends to raise a lot of interesting questions about morality and what it means to be human. The remakes have been heavily criticized since the failed attempt with Mark Wahlberg came out, but the original is still one of the best.

2. Due Date

It seems like any film with Zach Galifianakis in it is going to see him as a dysfunctional character that seriously needs some Ritalin. As Ethan however he is determined to spread his father’s ashes over the Grand Canyon. Peter is traveling with Ethan thanks to a bit of trouble at the airport they originally came from and is attempting to get home to his wife who is about to give birth to their child.

1. National Lampoon’s Vacation

Normally it’s considered a good idea to just stop and enjoy the sights and the wonder of nature at the Grand Canyon. But if you’re Clark Griswold and you’ve just stolen a till’s worth of money from the local hotel then you might want to grab your family and scoot on down the road.

The Grand Canyon is a great place to visit so long as you’ve got the time.
