Five of Our Favorite “Watermelon” Scenes in Movies

It may seem odd that fruit has made prominent appearances in film, but the watermelon is one that has. As we celebrate the Forth of July holiday and enjoy family picnics, we can think about watermelon scenes in movies and laugh.

Here are five awesome “watermelon” scenes from movies.

Dirty Dancing

Everyone who is a fan of the 1987 movie “Dirty Dancing” which was remade in 2017 remembers some of the famous lines from the film. “Nobody puts Baby in the corner”, “Go back to your playpen Baby” and “I carried a watermelon”. The movie follows the love story of Frances “Baby” Houseman (Jennifer Grey) and Johnny Castle (Patrick Swayze). Baby is the daughter of a doctor who joins her family for the summer retreat at an affluent resort in the Catskills in the 1950’s. Johnny is an entertainer at the resort.

The film launched a 1980’s dance craze and a great soundtrack. “I carried a watermelon” has managed to work its way into urban lexicon. Baby says the phrase to Johnny when she is dumbfounded while delivering a watermelon to the entertainers private party. Baby is in awe of Johnny and that phrase is all she can manage today. If you say “I carried a watermelon”, it can be interpreted as saying something really uncool when you meet someone good looking. Some would say it means even though you look like a prim and proper wealthy girl, you have a much less prim and proper side to you.

Ice Age

“Ice Age” is a great animated film that kids and adults enjoy. Funny enough, it contains a scene involving watermelons. “Ice Age” is about the animals who realized the Ice Age was coming and had to find warmer climates to live in in order to survive. The movie follows the adventures of a Wooly Mammoth (voiced by Ray Romano), a Sloth (voiced by John Laguizamo) and a Saber Tooth Tiger (Dennis Leary). The movie touches on the reason the Dodo Bird became extinct. According to the film, foreseeing the coming of the Ice Age, the dodos think they are superior to all other animals and begin a militant regime to protect their lives including stockpiling food. A great scene in the movie finds a dodo stealing a watermelon from the mammoth. As the mammoth and friends try to get back their melon, the dodo’s, protecting their stash, end up falling into a smoking volcano crater and become extinct.

The Heat

There aren’t many unfunny scenes in Melissa McCarthy and Sandra Bullock’s buddy cop comedy, 2013’s “The Heat”. Oddly enough one scene features a watermelon as a prop. When McCarthy’s Detective Mullins chases a drug selling perp through the streets, she hits him with her car. As she chases the limping perp, he passes a fruit stand and starts hurling fruit at Mullins. Mullins hurls a watermelon at him which brings him down. When he asks her what she hit him with and she tells him a watermelon, the perp tells her she is racist. Although a bit inappropriate, this is some of the raunchy humor in “The Heat”.

The Watermelon Heist

An often overlooked movie, and justifiably so, is 2003’s “The Watermelon Heist”. For a humorous take on the watermelon, the whole film is about finding the perfect watermelon. The movie is a satirical take on stereotypes, “The Watermelon Heist” is a fun comedy to laugh with. The movie follows the Brown family who need to make money. They enter a contest to win $10,000. They just need to find the sweetest, juiciest watermelon in the country.

The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai

This 1994 movie is not the greatest in movie history, but “The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai” has a great cast including John Lithgow, Jeff Goldblum, Ellen Barkin and Christopher Lloyd and is a fun science fiction comedy movie. It also contains a great scene involving a watermelon. The film is about Buckaroo Banzai (played by Peter Weller) who is a neuro scientist and a rock star. Buckaroo Banzai is called on to save the Earth from invading aliens. There is a scene in the movie where the cast experiments with watermelons to see if they can withstand the force of being airdropped so they can be used to feed the hungry. On a side note, the filmmakers put the scene in the movie just to see how closely the movie studio would watch the scenes during filming.
