Crazy weather movies are a lot of fun for the sheer idea that a lot of them could happen but a lot of them probably won’t. The conditions that would have to exist for these storms and natural phenomena to actually happen would mean that our world is a crazy, psychotic place. Well, it might be in some regards anyway, but in terms of our weather some things are at least able to be predicated and guarded against. In the movies however it always comes down to someone not listening, a storm system not being seen for what it is, or some other inane occurrence that happens that people don’t see fit to guard against. In any case it makes you glad to be inside at times since the weather depicted in the films is kind of terrifying at some moments and downright comical at others.
In the real world storms have this strange way of being able to sneak up on people even if they’re keeping a close watch on them. Only in the movies it seems do people not know when a hurricane is coming, or when they should probably follow the example of the animals they see running in the other direction. Maybe this is why humans are destined to go before any other species, because we have to sit and question everything that’s coming our way when an animal uses their instincts and will start running for cover when something bad is coming. Of course it might not do that much good in the case of the movies listed below, but it’s a start down the smart direction.
Here are a few of the best movies to watch when you’re stuck indoors for the day.
5. The Day After Tomorrow
Like a lot of natural disaster movies this one got heavily criticized for its use of ‘science’ and how it drew the kind of conclusions of what would happen to the earth if certain things were to happen and no one was to listen. Ever notice that? No one listens when someone who happens to know something about what they’re saying is telling them that disaster is coming. Wouldn’t you think that the scientists would love to pack and head for warm climates, waving at the morons that didn’t listen all the way? It’d be poetic justice in a way, but not at all humanitarian of course.
4. Twister
Call me crazy but I really don’t think enduring the swirling body of a tornado is going to keep these two intact enough to reach the eye of the storm as they did near the end. So the pipes run down at least 30 feet do they? That’s great, for the pipes. This movie was entertaining at the very least and it had enough comedy interspersed with the drama to be counted as a good movie. Plus Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt played off one another beautifully in their effort to reconcile after a brief struggle of trying to pretend like they didn’t care about each other. Good times while chasing storms.
3. Sharknado
Welcome the cameo fest! There have been so many cameos in the Sharknado movies that you could fill a book with names. Many people would agree that this movie and all those that have come after it are about as ridiculous as it gets, but somehow they keep getting made and, more than that, people keep watching them. You can say what you want about the movies, and many people do, but at the very least there is some entertainment value in watching people get chomped to pieces and eaten alive by killer sharks that have a nasty attitude and are being whipped around by a massive tornado.
2. The Fog
Ever lived on the coast? Fog is a bit creepy sometimes as it seems to envelop the land and simply take it away, making it almost feel as though the world has been taken over by billowing clouds of smoke that are impossible to see through. But if you start seeing shapes in the fog that shamble instead of walk and have glowing red eyes you might want to get indoors quickly and lock every door in your home. That might not be enough but it could be that it will make you feel a bit safer, until a decrepit, murderous revenant comes tearing down your door trying to make you pay for something you didn’t do.
1. Geostorm
This is what happens when humanity takes control of nature. The nature of humanity is so much worse than nature could ever be. At least the world and its many disasters happen for reasons that we can measure. The reasons behind humans destroying other humans is often kind of complicated or worse, horribly simple and extremely stupid. Still, it was a thrilling movie that kept a good pace throughout.
There are a lot of others you can watch as well, but these are some of the best that are out there.
